The second part in Gadar was really too much for me. And I really didn't like this time Amrish Puri's overacting. I can second your thoughts. My favourite his performances were in DDLJ and Pardes.
For Sunny Deol: Gadar is another film of Sunny Deol where I can understand his charm when he acts in understated style but far less his loud exaggerrated action parts. Quite a paradox for action star🤔

Your comment makes me want to watch it. Coz I too remember loving the love story and Sunny Deol as actor for the first time.. and not the excessive melodrama.. especially once Amrish Puri comes in..
I really wished Amrish Puri ever got a chance to act as a softie.. there is one movie Chachi 420 where he is still playing this aggressive loud father but still has some funny moments with Kamal Haasan.. and he was so good ..
I am going to revisit Gadar .. hope OSR watches it too..

You guess right about Gadar. The trailer carries the vibe of its 2001 original. Surprisingly still loud after 22 years.
I watched recently Gadar really curious about the biggest 2001 hit, the year of which I already watched 7 other films.
Someone described the success to me: famous for its evergreen songs and hyper masculine aggressive nationalistic second half. Pretty accurate especially about 2nd part which was for me mostly too loud and overcliched.
But I liked 1st part, particularly the love story and quite realistic picture of the days of partition. So for me mixed feelings but glad I watched it. I liked the character of Tara Singh

Gadar was a huge movie when it released
At that time I didnt really enjoy it .
But currently, I love to listen to Gadar 1 songs.. very melodious.. especially Udjaa Kaale Kawaan.. it is by Udit Narayan..
Sunny Deol is the original Hulk.. kind of an innocent giant.. So was his Father - Dharmendra.. you will see him in the latedt KJo movie..
You may want to watch Gadar 1 just to tick it off your list and know the euphoria behind it..
This one just looks unnecessary :( not a bit exciting
