In Mumbai Hindi, one would say "kya yeda aadmi hain" Sandeep Reddy Vanga is a Yeda Aadmi in my opinion ..

Thatβs a factor here as well.. these characters like Kabir Singh ( the alpha male) are what drives the romance novel industry.. when I taught a class on representation I had my students watch Kabir Singh ( it was more in your face in Kabir Singh ) and Arjun Reddy ( more nuanced I felt) and in their reflection papers there were many who found Arjun Reddy interesting and complex and mysteriously alluring π€¦πΎββοΈ to be honest I believe wr all knew at least on of his kind in college.. who loved as fiercely as he ragged against the world.. anyways my point is, these kinds of characters are dangerous representations coz they present themselves as aspirational characters.. to use the cliche the kind men want to be and women want to be with.. Vanga and those like him will continue to make stories that speak to the audience in this manner That excuses all bad behavior because he has an intrinsic good quality.. I am guessing in this movie itβs his love and the need to protect his father at all costs..

2023-11-24 18:12:37 +0000 UTCUnfortunately, such characters could be alluring to women as well if they are played in a mesmerizing manner which is concerning when done in a commercial mainstream movie with such a wide reach. I might have still given Sandeep Reddy Vanga the benefit of doubt regarding his problematic gaze/treatment if he had just reiterated that Kabir Singh was an obviously flawed person with his own demons but he found a partner in spite of that which could happen in real life. Instead, he clearly stated that if you do not have the freedom to abuse/be violent physically/emotionally towards your partner, then it's not true love...how warped is that!

OSR or foreign viewers might not get it but you can say a lot about the direction in which Indian society is evolving by the kind of movies which do well (clear trends/phases) and this is especially evident in Hindi cinema. I think we are already increasingly seeing a certain desensitization to violence/abuse wrt incidents that are happening in our society.

I have to be honest i was looking for something real offensive dialogue in the trailer π the scariest thing for me about such directors and influential people is that it is just not them making horrendous and offensive statements and men supporting them but it is the women going gaga over it ππ₯΅

2023-11-24 05:11:14 +0000 UTCI thought the trailer was well cut to show the shock & awe moments filled with violence which is what the audience for this kind of a film is looking for. It leans HARD into the current phase of testosterone fuelled movies and ramps it up 100 notches higher and a huge majority of Indian men with ingrained toxic masculinity are naturally drawn towards and applaud such characters. With such movies, it becomes imperative to identify and talk about the director's gaze & intent as well as the lens through which he wants the audience to perceive the characters and what we feel for them.

It seems that the emotions and visual graphics are drawn for shock effect rather than an organic part of story. Happy to be proven wrong and Iβm rooting for Ranbir. He looks really immersed in the character.

It's not enforced at all in single screens and checking is inconsistent in multiplexes especially for mainstream movies with a wide release. Similar to how he said that "It's not love if you can't slap your partner" among other awful things said during that infamous Kabir Singh interview, waiting for the director to make a shitty statement about how Animal portrays the ideal father-son relationship or something like that ππ
