Funny guy was in Mark antony and jailer ( asst of director ). He got famous because of nelson movies.

Tamizheiniyan Viswanathan

Please watch Kolamaavu Kokila! You'll have a blast for sure!

Varshini Selvan

please do a watch along of "kolamavu kokila" its awesome

praanesh sambath

Nice one. Wanna go back and revisit Hey Ram. It's been a while. I looked up and found Mani Ratnam's O Kadhal Kanmani is also in sync-sound. Haven't seen it but will check it out.

Josh

Static noise can (and should be) eliminated with the right equipment suitable for the location and adjusting the gain. Of course effort is required but I wouldn't call it a "luxury". Again, I go back to the example of lighting. It has it's challenges when outdoors with overcast, weather changes, golden hour limitations. But for the sake of the film, you have to put the effort in. Every time I watch a film with ADR, all the dialogue can be heard very clearly, even if someone is speaking more softly or whispering. For me, this is the opposite of nuance. All the nuance that's captured in sync-sound is completely lost with ADR. Whether it's an art house film or a commercial film, sync sound elevates that film. But that's just a difference of opinion.

Josh

Now about sync-sound being a luxury. I went to film school and it pained me to hear the static noise and lack of punch in dialogue whenever I chose sync sound and we were outdoors. Also doing ADR allows for a more nuanced dialogue delivery which elevates films. This is however not true for artistic/realistic films so I wouldn't defend them the same way I would defend a commercial masala film!

Hey Ram is the answer to your question.

Sibi Naayagam

This comment needs to be pinned!

If loved Jailer and this one, then you should watch his debut film Kolamaavu Kokila which is another black comedy with a female lead. And yes, Beast is the only anomaly in his filmography.

Navin Kumar

I rewatched just now. The song came directly after their wedding although SK walked out with serious face at the end of the song. I don’t think that means he rejected her 😏

Abhi

I love the watch alongs with you more than watching it by myself. Interesting.

GBV

Wow.... You guys are slowly giving us a good feel of your tastes! You guys love these dark films with either brutal action of comedy, especially that of Lokesh and Nelson. I am pretty sure both Nelson and Lokesh's debut films ('Kolamaavu Kokila' by Nelson; 'Maanagaram' by Lokesh) HAVE TO BE watched by you both! Pretty damn sure you are going to love it. I can bet pretty big on that already! Tamil cinema has some very interestingly unique directors right now who are handling mainstream mass commercial movies. Even Maaveeran was a very unique commercial movie that you guys loved and that director (Madonne Ashwin) is also a really good bet! Good times to be following Tamil cinema!

SR Kumar

Had not watched this film until now and loved it with you guys. Thanks to all who recommended this one.

Kiru

I dint even see that! I forwarded and started when the actual movie started !patience isnt my favorite thing ever! 😂

Divya

MayaR, Did that really happen? I don’t remember 😂

Abhi

Tamil Audio , yes (thank the stars). But I can assure you a lot of the in-movie text was in Malayalam. 😂

Abhi

Example - they wrote the title Doctor at the start in Malayalam. Somewhere else also I saw- don’t remember now.

Abhi

Ah Got it ! I forwarded that bit 😂

Divya

Perhaps it's not laziness and it is instead, as you've stated, the norm in these industries. But as a viewer it 'feels' lazy. Movies are an audio-visual art form and even if a lot of hard work can go in the 'visual' part (lighting, cinematography, costumes, set design etc), if the same level of attention is not given to the 'audio' part then my willing suspension of disbelief is tremendously affected. And you're right, there are many films where the dubbing is done fairly well that you forget about it (Jallikattu), but if it is so noticeable that I can't ignore it, which was the case with Doctor, then I'm fine with skipping these films. I do hope this changes. I can only imagine how great Karnan would've been if it was sync sound. But as I said, I'm glad people can still enjoy these films. It's just personal preference.

Josh

Lazy filmmaking? So all the hard work the cast and crew put into making a great film is lazy unless there’s sync sound? I really don’t get that sorry. I’m speaking for myself but I know that dubbing or ADR has gotten really good to the point that I don’t even realize it’s not sync sound. In the 90s and 2000s it’s definitely more evident but at this point I don’t notice honestly. Of course synch sound is ideal but it’s also not the norm in these industries. I don’t think it’s due to laziness but just that it’s become the norm. Of course you can have your preference but unfortunately that’s not gonna happen any time soon. Guess you’ll just miss out on good films

Api

It looked more like Kannada for me, and i was also really worried when I saw the title Doctor in Kannada (i think) rather than in Tami 😂😂

Josiah Mahendran

The audio is in Tamil… but the opening title and the text that was displayed in between scenes were in malayalam… which is weird so i think it might be a platform issue… i am glad the audio was in Tamil…

Sharath Shaji

I would disagree about sync-sound being luxury, budget wise. Most (if not all) indie/small budget films do sync-sound, including many low budget Malayalam films. I find it lazy filmmaking to do ADR. Imagine if the same approach was taken with lighting. "Let's not bother with proper lighting on set, we'll just color correct and fix it with VFX in post". The movie would look terrible. It's the same with sound. If smaller low budget indie films can show that kind of dedication to quality filmmaking, then these mid/big budget movies have no excuse. Even with films I liked such as Karnan, Super Deluxe and RRR, my overall enjoyment and immersion is significantly lessened due to these films doing ADR. I'm still glad a lot of people can enjoy movies with ADR without noticing or being bothered by it. But I sincerely hope it's soon replaced with sync-sound in the Tamil and Telugu industry.

Josh

I can assure you it’s all Tamil lol

Api

I dint notice it where was it in malayalam?

Divya

Thank you for making me rewatch this amazing and brilliant film with you guys!! 😍 So happy that you notice how Nelson is killing it with the dark comedy genre 🔥 You should also do a watch a long with his debut film "Kolamavu Kokila", which is one of my favourite films, along with "Doctor", of his. You can watch it on ZEE5 💪🏽

Josiah Mahendran

Btw, I just hope he rejected the girl after the final song. She doesn’t deserve him 😃

Abhi

Thank you for this! Have been asking for this since it released in Netflix! 😍 that metro train scene is one of my all time favorite scenes probably after the “Jaya Jaya Jaya hey” karate scene with the commentary. 😂 weird though, why were the writing (like place names etc) in this movie in Malayalam? For a moment I thought this was a Malayalam dub and thought “shit they screwed it” . But was happy when I heard Tamil. 😄

Abhi

It's basically dubbing. So instead of sync-sound, where the audio is captured on set (with little to no adjustments made through dubbing), ADR is basically re-recording all the dialogue again in the studio. I've always hated ADR because of the disconnect there is between the emotion in the performance and what we're hearing. It hurts the performance and the film overall. A lot of Malayalam films use sync-sound but every Tamil and Telugu movie I've seen has been ADR.

Josh

Thanks for this Korbin 💛, the watch alongs are rocking 🥳 these fun Tamil movies watch alongs have almost become integral part of my entertainment these days 😆. Keep doing these great videos, you may not know but it brightens up many of our days.😇 . You are doing an amazing and wonderful job of balancing especially with Rick's unpredictable mood swings and not so palatable views for many 😂

ThiruWilliams

You should also watch Nelson's first film kolamavu kokila which is more funny and Dark than this movie

Manoj

Tried watching this movie but couldn't get past the ADR. Just within the first 10 minutes the words not matching the lip movements and dialogues very clearly sounding re-recorded was excruciating. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know of any Tamil or Telugu films that aren't ADR? I've yet to come across one :/

Josh

the police funnyguy you have seen in Jailer. He was the assistant of the producer. He was the one who was in bathtub in Jailer also who in one scene hides behind the door and say hai to tamana in that movie... Hope you remember.

Rajesh R

What do you mean by "he got the star to act in the way he wanted to"? Beast was the way it was because Nelson was a lazy bum who thought he could ride on Vijay's stardom. He deserved all the bashing as he openly admitted in interviews that he will not spend more than 2 months on a script regardless of whether the product is fully complete. He is that lazy.

AshQueen

Another movie along the same lines for a watch-along would be ‘Naanum Rowdy Dhan’!

Anisha Kamal

Sivakarthikeyan’s best movies are Maaveeran and Doctor so far. Let’s wait for the Ayalan next! Nelson’s best is Doctor followed by Jailer and Kolamaavu Kokila. Good luck Jerry’ is a remake of the latter. If you haven’t seen the remake, the original could make a decent watch-along. But having seen Doctor, it might not be up there. It could be a good candidate few months down the line.

Anisha Kamal

The after-credits has couple of scenes and the song. It shows that he actually didn’t take people’s kidneys but was just bluffing. He is after all an actual Doctor who has ethics which is a wonderful touch. The protagonist stays true to the character throughout. These sorta things are still hardly seen in Indian movies. The generic movies don’t follow the basic logic stuff like this. Wonderful watch-along.

Anisha Kamal

Yeah, Beast was a misfire. Nelson basically didn’t have the time to finish the screenplay or even the script as he wanted to. If Nelson had the chance to do the film he wanted to, Beast would’ve been another dark comedy riot with cool stunts. Nelson is quite quirky and they come out well in his movies. Fans of his movies did feel let down by Beast. And he was trolled mercilessly for that too. Doctor was his best coz he got the star to act in the way he (Nelson) wanted to. Jailer had some compromises and Beast was full of it.

Anisha Kamal

Nelson is a fan of breaking bad, thus you can see many inspirations from it in his films just like the twins. And also the actor Redin Kingsley which Rick liked also appeared in Jailer, Mark Antony but Korbin, I think you have mistaken him for SJ Surya in Mark Antony trailer. Next, I recommend you guys watch Maanaadu before watchin Mark Antony because you need to get familiar with SJ Surya's crazy acting in order to fully enjoy his performance in Mark Antony.

Viswa

Sivakarthikeyan wrote a song lyrics in Beast..he is not in that movie.

Guna Sekar

I am hoping you pick Maanadu also the same way… it lost the poll twice coming in Second! Thats a fun watchalong too!

Sharath Shaji

Fan-freaking-tastic! 👌 this was a fun watchalong! And Yes… you guys need to watch Kolamavu Kokila… its his debut film but he killed it! Definitely need to do a watchalong ( Please do not add to watchalong poll 🙏 )

Sharath Shaji

Found this article from film companion that interviewed Nelson and this is what he said about Beast: “But we should have taken more time with Beast in its post-production period and I think that might have helped us fine-tune the climax action set pieces and Veera Raghavan’s character. We needed five to six more months of work to really complete the film as we planned. However, since it was the peak of the pandemic with lockdown restrictions back then, neither could we deliver on the VFX front nor could we assemble the film like we planned to. It was mostly logistical issues, and we had many scenes that we could not shoot at the time as per plan. So we faced a lot of issues. We could not perfect that film as much as we wanted to and it missed that final polish.”

Api

I'm gonna watch the reaction now, but just rushed to the end to watch your initial thoughts first. Glad you liked it! And to answer your question about Beast, I think it was neither a proper Vijay film nor a Nelson film. Looked like they tried to strike a balance like how Lokesh did with master, but it was a great miss.

Diya

The funny cop you liked also had a part in jailer . He was wearing the shower cap and gown

Api

This was such a good watch a long !! Had a lot of fun 🤩 thanks guys 😊

Api

Loved the watch along.

GBV

So very glad that you guys enjoyed this movie just like many of us. This was so much fun, i will have to rewatch this weekend again. I had forwarded in-between to get to the review part quicker 😂 no patience at all ! thanks a lot Korbin! You are doing superb job with these watch alongs, great going🥰💥💙 loved 💙 every minute of it!

Divya

Korbin great observation, Nelson is a huge breaking bad fan, hence the salamanca twin inspiration and the acid immersion killing in Jailer and also Walter White masked villain in Beast! Please do watch his debut Kolamavu Kokila it is another superb movie from him!

Divya

Yes Korbin… it opened fine…and dragged it till 2:37:00 just to be sure 👍🏻

Sharath Shaji

Now working thanks

Hareesh

Now its working.
