Same here.. studied in a convent school. Most teachers though brown, were either D'Souzas, Pintos, DCosta :)

Just watched the making of this song. Zoya mentions that it’s a fantastical world that they’re building. But they made the characters Anglo-Indian because that community fits best in this fantasy world that they’re building.
Does make sense. I studied in a convent school and almost all my teachers were Anglo Indians who wore very western clothes. Same for some of my classmates. I remember during Christmas parties they would stand out because their clothes were so western compared to the rest of the kids. I guess today, these differences won’t be as visible.
We also have many old movies that are based on this community. The one that comes to mind is Amol Palekar and Tina Munim’s Baaton Baaton mein.
Also, Kabhi haan kabhi na! 😄

White kids in the 50s nah can’t relate. I’ll just go back to relating to Shahrukh khan flying on jet packs, and ranbir kapoor shooting beams out of his hands at a powerful witch.
Fuckin idiots

Chalo, Let me put this in the most simple way.
An artist is ABSOLUTELY FREE to create any kind of content: fictional, non fictional, animated, or whatever their brain creates and desires. They are not obligated to anyone’s preferences. Likewise, the audience is also ABSOLUTELY FREE to decide whether or not they want to engage on the content the artist creates. However, any individual with a conservative mindset would try to object, offend, and disrupt their work without even watching it because they find it against their preferences. If they don’t like it, then it’s an absolutely unnecessary project and consider it garbage. Unfortunately, this happens a lot in our country. Such hypocritical approach. I mean just look at all the people banning movies (specially Hindi Cinema) based on such stupid and ridiculous reasons. I believe the right way of approach is “I don’t like this type of story, or I don’t enjoy it; therefore, I’m not gonna watch it.” Simple as that. But that would be too civilized and open minded behavior for everyone. And who likes that approach. Hahah 😂😂😂 PEACE OUT ✌️

Tinkle was the best.
Shikari Shambu, Supandi were my favorites..
There used to be this regional short story book too called Chandoba in Marathi and Chandamama in Hindi I think. They were available to us only during summer vacation.
Pure nostalgia!

Tinkle was such a big part of my childhood...me & my cousins used to buy one each on the railway platform for every train journey and exchange with each other as soon as we finished reading one. 😊
I still have around 50 Tinkles though I lost the rest over the years...your comment made me want to read them again! ✨

Filmmakers are Artists. They make what is personal to them. Zoya has already spoken about how Archie’s is personal to her so all the power to her for making it and as far as the young actors are concerned, I don’t care who their parents are or what the color of their skin is. I will reserve my judgments based purely on the merits of the movie and the acting after watching it.

Can't wait. Grabbed a handful of Archies comics and Tinkle double digests and Tintin the other day. It's pure escapism... My brain shifts to child mode every time. I'm no longer in the war torn 2020s.

Absolutely. And I agree that India has good content but I was mainly referring to the genre films. The kind that have the appeal of reaching an international audience. Like Train To Busan, Raid, Squid Game, Money Heist, Pan's Labyrinth, Oldboy, City Of God etc. These aren't just popular films/series, they also have quality filmmaking. We haven't had something like that until recently with RRR, and even that pales in comparison. Honestly, the last genre films I saw that had quality filmmaking were Qala and Monica, Oh My Darling, which was last year. We've gotta step it up.

I don't think India lacks in producing good content in any way. The problem is where the hype is, and that is usually there for below average films like you said cuz of ppl hyping certain "stars" up. While good films, just get unnecessary hate if it's not by their fav star or whatever. Instead of judging the movie on the basis of story, they choose their fav films beforehand on the basis of who's in it

Huh? That's based on what they said in the video. "The cinephiles, cos that's the majority of the stupid babies, will have an interest in this because of the reasons we said... -- I'm interested in the true stupid babies' opinion on this one."

FACTS! I look at films and series coming out from the rest of the world and it blows my mind, and India keeps churning out garbage after garbage that audiences keep hyping up because it has their favorite "star" in it lol our standards are so low that we think sub par films are masterpieces worth sending to the Oscars. Look at all the South Korean films that are well known internationally and we have basically nothing. Even Anurag Kashyap's last 2 films were trash. And then people will say "we don't care about what foreigners think of Indian films, they are made for Indian people with Indian sensibilities" and then will watch literally every foreign reaction video for validation that (unlike Rick and Korbin, and Jaby too) offer no insights or commentary on the artistic merit of the film and cinema in general. I am hopeful, though. The Karan Johar produced 'Kill' that premiered at TIFF and Berlin with Rahul Bose sound promising.

Well, for that you'll have to get basic literacy to large chunks of North India... hopeless not just when it comes to film choices but fascist politics as well. India will never come up unless this dark hole is resolved. Meanwhile, the rest of us are being dragged down by these feudal regions.

I read Archies growing up. But i don't remember much except their character traits ..
I am excited to see what Zoya does with this. I agree with production design . It looks so good..
My mother who grew up in 60s and 70s, their fashion was pretty influenced by the western culture. Polka dots, frills and one piece sailor kind dresses was in. So I wont say it doesn't look Indian at all..
I did like the song..it reminds me of papa kehte hain for some reason.. the lyrics, the simplicity of it is nice..
I am excited for this series :).

While we are on the topic of Zoya's movies, waiting for a watchalong with Steph for Gully Boy....she needs to see more of Ranveer's brilliance!
She also missed out on Band Baaja Baaraat, maybe she could do a watchalong with Zack for Romance month next Feb.

I didn't grow up reading the Archies and have only basic knowledge about the main characters but I'm damn excited that we are getting a new Zoya film, will always be interested in anything she does! 💕
Korbin, please do a watchalong with Steph for this since she can point out references that many of us might not get and it also seems very much like a fun easy-breezy watchalong type movie. 🎶

Yes! I remember having an argument with someone who said that no one in India read Archies. I'm from Mumbai but I was introduced to Archies comics by my cousins in Kerala. So while I agree that most Indians probably didn't read it yet there were enough of us who grew up on the comics.

Truly looking forward to this 😍✨ Happy that we have filmmakers like Zoya Akhtar sticking to what they truly want to make, despite having such a braindead audience who only want overhyped action films, and choose to label all other art and creativity "trash". India really needs a better film audience, or the producers are going to lean towards the undeserved trash that makes them money over actually good films.

I grew up reading Archies comics in India in the 90s...and I come from a small town! Archies was so popular amongst my big brother's peer group, my peer group my cousins etc. Am quite interested in seeing how Zoya has translated it to sit within an Indian backdrop!

I read a lot of Archie's as a kid. There used to be a Archie's comic strip in the Times of India everyday.
