The first time these people see a gun is at the end of this movie when the Portuguese arrive in the land, by the way. This movie is heavily injected with religious text or folklore of Kerala or Malayalee culture. The Seductress woman who feeds on men is one of the evil mythical creatures in said folklore, called a Yakshi. Mammooty's character, the landlord, is supposed to be a Brahmin, and Brahmin's are strict vegetarians and never drink alcohol, but you can see Arjun Ashokan's character's obvious confusion when he sees him eating chicken so lavishly and drinking coconut toddy and also the scorn in the cook (Sidharth's character) because he knows that he's fake. For Brahmin's it is sort of unholy to eat non-veg and to not wear a special thread(Poonolil) across their torso. So from that moment, you knowww something's off about Mammooty. And, the reason they showed us the scene where the Yakshi courts Mammooty is probably to show how evil and powerful Mammooty's impersonator or the goblin is that he even sleeps with other evil spirits. It's also so weird that in the beginning, Mammooty was so nice to Arjun considering how during those times, people like him would have been merciless towards lower castes who were pretty much like slaves. And also shows how naiive Arjun's character was.

2024-05-18 09:27:29 +0000 UTCIts interesting that Rick mentioned its very Mel Gibson-ish, Apocalypto ends with showing Spanish conquistadors showing dawn of new age, and this movie ends with showing invading Portuguese, signaling a new age? Also showing power transfer to the invaders..

2024-03-22 04:06:38 +0000 UTCYou missed the most obvious symbolism -- the game of dice. :). But yeah, the technicals on this movie is on a different level. My fav performance was that of the cook. I do understand the cailber of Mamooks and Arjun, so my bars were already high for these folks... But the cooks ( siddharth ) performace was an eye opener and he was amazing. Overall a directors movie.
