It was ahead of its time and very gutsy of SRK and KJo to try this out bang on in the middle of SRK's superstardom. But at the same time, re-watchability wise, I'll agree with Korbin because seeing this version of SRK is tough. Incredible acting by SRK, but the character Dev was not a good person.

And then eventually she falls for the guy who suggested it .. 🤷🏽♀️ in what world is respect there?? She hates littering and is a clean freak.. but tolerates this guy littering .. yeah.. initially all beautiful for whatever reason she is attracted to, eventually it's going to get on her nerves.. Rani's character is depressed and is attracted to any other broken person she could to at that moment.. Lil couples counseling , and therapy would have helped her realize whats wrong .. and how haing her voice at the right time will change lot of things for her .. Dev needed a LOT of perspective and healing .. Anyway, this movie was just a mess ..

If he can learn to cope/heal with his trauma in a healthy way e.g. therapy, I believe his old self can come back. Maybe not entirely, but partly. The same goes for Maya. If not, their relationship could end up bitter for this reason, not because of lack of compatibility, respect, chemistry.

One good scene with the kid doesnt change the dad he was .. Maya falling for him didnt make any sense .. The relationship between Maya and Dev would end up bitter too .. It was presented as a love story with a happy ending. If it was more like Revolutionary Road, I don't think people would have had as big of a problem with it (at least I wouldn't). Similar with KANK, people had a problem with the movie and thought it was glorifying cheating because Dev and Maya ended up together. The characters in KANK were much more redeemable than Kabir. Anyone who's been around a Kabir Singh will tell you they don't change. Maybe for some time they can control themselves, but eventually something will trigger them and they go back to being exactly who they've always been.

You said in that review you think the reason people had a problem with that movie is because they didn't want to see Shahid Kapoor playing a violent and misogynistic character (which was not the reason btw) and you didn't understand that. How is that different from you not wanting to rewatch this movie because of how Shahrukh Khan was in this movie? You saw Kabir as a flawed person, while everyone in this movie- besides Sexy Sam and I guess Dev's mom- as terrible people, even though Kabir was arguably a much worse person than everyone in this movie.

I didn't think Rick was going to hate this movie, but I also did not expect him to love it the way he did either 😂 I agree with Rick's takes on this movie more than Korbin's. I saw Rishi asking Maya to be his best woman as extremely gracious too, not at all selfish. I could never do it. As for rewatchability, this is one of my favorites. So Rick is not alone in that lol. It depends on my mood, but this would be at the top. RARKPK would be at the bottom, while ADHM and SOTY would not make it to the list at all.

To me, Kal Ho Naa Ho gets the weird, twisted games of desire/homoeroticism that KJo has always been preoccupied with, very much like reading a 20th c Henry James or Edith Wharton novel. That brilliant ballet scene in KANK is straight out of James. Like the coffee cup scene, I would never notice: it’s like what Oscar Wilde calls “the vulgar details” of life. But I love that we agree on the music. KANK definitely has the best soundtrack.

The voice overs are done by Naseeruddin Shah and his wife Ratna Pathak. There is an appearance by Big B. He isn't Sexy Sam but he is....odd. I'd recommend viewing it a a watch along with your ladies. I think that they'd love it.

Totally agree that in terms of quality this comes just behind My Name is Khan. But it’s tough to rewatch it all the time unlike other Karan Johar films. Every character is terrible and they all did great job. And hats off to Karan Johar and SRK to actually make him this terrible that everybody hated him. Your review reminded me of Rajeev Masand who might be one of the few critics who loved this film that time. Also Rani looks like a dream in this 😍
