Asha’s voice aged just as much. Being 4 younger makes a difference, but she sounded just as old in that same album you mentioned (she sings the title song of Mujhse Dosti Karogi).
But in your 60s/70s, just 1-2 years makes a huge difference in voice quality. Lata voice difference in Mohabattein vs Mujhse dosti Karogi is huge … Asha Bhosle, in comparison, doesn’t have much recordings in her mid to late 70s.
Asha also had the huge advantage of being able to mostly sing lower pitched item songs in the 90s... Pieces where the maturity in her voice enhanced the song. Whereas lata was still given these sweety-sweet high pitched romantic numbers and expected to sound the same as when she was 30 yrs old. Just the fact that her voice hit those notes at over 70 yrs old was a miracle tbh.
I wish more composers had properly utilized the maturity of Latas voice in the 90s.. There are a few, like this song "Yeh Raat Khushnaseeb Hai": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IJKDIdiJPc

I always thought her sister Asha's voice lasted longer into old age. When I first started watching Bollywood movies in the 90's I didn't know that the stars lip synced. I believe it was Mujse Dosti Karogi that I asked one of my Desi Student's why Kareena Kapoor sang like an old lady. I was devastated to find out they didn't sing. I was in denial thinking it was only the female stars, because surely Shah Rukh was singing, right??? It was like finding out the Easter bunny wasn't real and holding out hope for Santa Clause. LOL

SLB strives for perfection in each frame because lataji showed us that perfection in art is possible… every song of hers is study material.

Lataji maintained her voice better than almost any human being in history , but to say her voice didn’t change is kinda ridiculous … her tone, texture, flexibility, etc were entirely different by the time she sang in the 2000s… the innocent velvety free flowing nature of her voice was pretty much gone, and she took on a much more thick, piercing, heavy tone (Im mostly talking about the late 90s and 2000s era when she passed 70 yrs old)..

I would definitely suggest another underrated gem of the Lata-AR Rahman combo- ‘Ek tu hi Bharosa’ from the 2000 movie ‘Pukar’. Definitely needs subs though. https://youtu.be/d_pLXZnUoPc?si=SfxAC2lR_wTB_472

There is a reason why Lata Mangeshkar is called the nightingale..
The expressions in the song come from her singing .. there is nothing extra she is doing to convey the emotion.. but if you know the meaning of the words, the emotion of the song os conveyed through her singing..
I think SLB pointed this out in some interview if I am not mistaken, and I noticed it .. it indeed is true ..
For OSR to understand what Lataji can just do with her singing is listen to O palanhare from Lagaan with the subtitles and Luka Chuppi fron Rang de Basanti..
These two songs are modern , and still very Indian.. Rahman did magic with Lataji's voice with these two compositions.. also the Lyrics play a major role in making the songs what they are
