Was Laapataa Ladies the RIGHT pick for the OSCARS??? Discussion

Comments

Disagree... The music, the 3 leads performances, gentle/tender storytelling style, score, and Ravi Kishan's performance are all not ordinary but superlative!! Only because it's Hindi is why it's getting petty hate from other regions πŸ˜† ppl need to get over language wars and be honest abt content being good

Disagree but ok

I get what y'all are saying but I disagree that Laapataa Ladies has any chance. I highly doubt it'll even come close to being nominated. I don't believe the artistic merit of Laapataa Ladies is "extremely" high. I wouldn't even say it's high, it's just standard. The film doesn't excel in any departments. The cinematography, music and editing are all vanilla. They do nothing to stand out creatively. Doesn't mean it's bad, just nothing to rave about. The acting is good. Everyone did a fine job. People not familiar with India may find Ravi Kishan's performance too quirky and comical. I don't think the international community is gonna pay much attention to this, but let's see.

I'm excited for it!!

Even if US Distribution and mounting a campaign was the main criteria, All We Imagine beats Laapata Ladies in that too with Janus Films(Criterion, also distributed Drive My Car) distributing All We Imagine as Light and about to give it an oscar campaign.

This is an all time bottlejob. Laapata is a good movie but Horrible choice to send. It wont make the top 15 shortlist while AWIAL was a gaurenteed nomination, and a very strong contender to win. All we Imagine as Light, Cannes Grand Prix winner which already has an established US Distribution(Janus films of Drive my car and EO) with history of winning International Oscar ready to go. Bharadwaj Rangan is acting like clueless boomer because All we imagine has the backing of a distributer who has hundred times more clout and muscle and past success than Aamir Khan Productions(I mean this will full respect to Aamir Khan Produstions). Sorry Payal Kapadia, this is a country of clueless morons. Apart from absolutely clownish incompetency that is the indian film federation, There are political reasons for this too. Payal Kapadia whose first movie was not allowed to release by india's fascist government, and who are currently taking her to court for leading a peaceful protest against them, was never going to be allowed to make films in India, let alone them nominating her for Oscar submission, no matter which award she won. We had a freaking Cannes Grand Prix winning film and we didn’t send it LMAO. Unfortunately, All we imagine has to now pull off what Anatomy of a Fall did last year but that isnt something that can happen to non-white non-western movie where it can waltz its way into Best Film. Really hope Payal and team get all the lost they deserve in oscars and get some nomination somehow. It's high time Oscars scraps the one country one movie rule and finds an alternate way to get international films nominated outside of a country submitting them. Far too many good movies fall by the waist side becasue film federations across the world are either too idiotic, or the filmmakers are being punished by fascist governments.

But being a Netflix film may have its chances if not anything else.

You are right

OUR STUPID REACTIONS

You forgot Pebbles the Tamil film that was also chosen for Oscar submission one year

I don't think it was the right choice for Academy Awards...there were better options!

Kamalika Ganguly

Despite your mild support around its chances, I feel this has zero chance of getting any traction with Academy voters whatsoever.
