It is tragic as the story by itself is, knowing that it is autobiographical and imagining the sheer strength and courage it took from Mari to make this movie just left me speechless. It took me a good few days to kind of get my head out of the movie. It made me reflect on Mari's other movies and I learned from his interviews that all his movies draw some inspiration from something that he dealt with in his life. As someone else said, this movie is an answer to people who kept asking why Mari always takes movies about caste or socioeconomic oppression. This is an answer to who is Mari Selvaraj. Next one I would recommend is Pariyerum Perumal, which was his debut. I also agree that it probably wouldn't work for the Oscars for similar reasons you guys mentioned, but it really doesn't matter. The importance of this movie and story is already cemented. Nominations and awards are secondary.

2024-10-12 04:51:11 +0000 UTCYes, it is straight out of Mari's ( Director's) life events, and the main lead kid of the film is himself. Also, except for 10 or 11 artists in the movie, all are Mari's relatives or those living in that village. Realizing that Mari, the movie's director and the main kid in the film, grew up to take films with such a strong voice is inspiring. How hard it would have been for the director to write such a script and how courageous he was to do so. The trauma is enormous to overcome. It is not only inspiring but also painful to think how many people's/ children's stories of hardships and their talents are unheard of or wasted because of such norms in society for blue-collar workers. The mere thought of how an owner's decision could directly affect the worker's kids or the next generation haunts me whenever I think about this movie.

The teacher story happened with Mari and his teacher and he calls her one of his Angels in life. Not just this Pariyerum perumal was also the story of Mari

This movie is an answer to those who often complain about tamil cinema making movies about oppressed ones all the time. The reason is that the makers had been through Vaazhai kind of experience… loved this watch along 😍

And those 2 boys who acted actually do that job of banana lugging...also that kid who played the friend' role was the one who played the younger version of Dhanush in Raayan 🤩
