Also a good assessment of the industry’s preferences for certain racial phenotypes is to look at how many non ( insert industry language here) speaking female actors who are clearly from the north of India have made that industry their own? This might not be a Tamil industry specific problem but the numbers don’t lie.. things are changing for the good and thank god for that.. but it needs to be addressed as a problem first.. and this documentary is doing that..

“White skinned immigration and dominance” you mean colonization right? Colonialism isn’t a synonym for British colonization right?

I feel the same way about all those yesteryear tamil super actresses like Saritha,Sujatha,Sumithra,Srividhya,Shobha,Sripriya also Archana who they mentioned in the video but Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth are still acting as heroes. It is quiet sad but in a way I'm glad we have such strong female oriented movies even though it was 3 or 4 decades ago.

The mental health impact is real. Colour adds another layer to the increasing body dysmorphia among women around the world.
Colourism predates colonialism - we have such a long history of it via waves of white-skinned immigration and dominance over the population. BJP worships and reinforces this (caste) system. It is the no. 1 cause.
A personal preference for white or black or brown or golden skin is fine but a social consensus suggests something weird occurred historically. I wonder what babies prefer without this social conditioning.

In films, it'll help if female actors get to be actor-stars once again and not mere objects ... like a Shobana or an Urvashi or Suhasini. A darker-skinned Kajol was loved because she was an actor - star.
Tbh, it was only after joining OSR I realised men were more important than women in our movies. Very naive, I know. But none of the conversations in my childhood reflected that. Probably because of Shobana's dominance. No clue.
But there you go, when I come here. A Shobana is forgotten, but a Mohanlal is remembered.

This is why I love OSR so muchhh!!! You guys are awesome.. and Korbin, The movie where Radika apte is paired with Rajinikanth is Kabali, Directed by Pa. Ranjith who has also produced this Documentary. Pa Ranjith also made an older, beautiful dark skinned heroine named Easwari as the pair Rajnikanth in his next movie Kaala..

Oh yes I agree about the last name I believed they used Sharma and I’m like ?? That’s not a Tamil last name 😂 so definitely not perfect representation . But then they’d use Appa to refer to their father so I was confused what new fusion language was this haha

Great video! India has a long way to go. watching Never have I ever and seeing Maitreyi a Sri Lankan Tamil and in bridgerton with Tamilians Charithra and Simone was a big deal and it’s sad that we see Hollywood and British industries be more open to giving them opportunities than our own people/country . However that being said I would say it’s changing positively in Tamil film industry with directors like vetrimaaran, pa ranjith, Mari selvraj, karthik subbaraj etc. dominating the industry.
