Pathan are originally from Afghanistan, they are called pasthu today. In those days they were called pathan very strong military people. There surname ends with khan. So are Shahrukh khan, amer khan and Salman khan pathans(from Afghanistan)?.well it depends some people's now a days add their surname as khan. In this movie the red head character name is sher (tiger) khan. Khans or pathan claim themselves to be descendants of Mongols ( genghis khan) whose descendants ruled half the world in 13th century. In India they became known as mughals ( king akbar from jodha akbar and his descendants). Turks also descendants of Mongols, originally from Mongolia.

A lot of credit for the movie should be given to the writer Salim Khan (Salman Khan's father), who had already written a few hit movies before this movie. He borrowed a few incidents from real life.
For e.g. the initial police station face off scene between Amitabh and Pran (sexy red) was inspired by an incident that took place between Salim's father (a cop himself) and a goon back in the day.
Here are some other fun facts:
This was the first "hit" movie of Amitabh's career that created the history not just for him, but also for the Hindi movie industry (with angry young man wave sweeping for years to come). Amitabh had had 9 flops in a row before this movie and had apparently given up on his Bollywood dream, ready to leave Mumbai for good. But Salim Khan had other plans for him.
Pran had been one of the highest paid actors (known mostly for negative roles in the first half of his career) in Bollywood for quite some time during the release of this movie (1973), and would go on to maintain that place till Don (1980) when Amitabh replaced him.
Ram and Shyam (1965) is another one of Pran's classics (where he played negative shade) I really like where he faces off with Dilip Kumar.
The old man (with fiendish laugh) is very well known character actor. My favorite of his classics is Chupke Chupke.
P.S. : I know Salim-Javed are credited as writers here but Salim mentioned this in his interview that he had already sold the script of this movie by the time Javed joined him.

Doesn’t get more iconic than Pran!
But this is his best role because he’s the cool friend and not just the villain. Although no one’s a better villain than him either.♥️♥️♥️ It’s said that he recommended Amitabh Bachchan for this role of Vijay to Prakash Mehra, the director!!
Love his new nickname…Sexy Red!!

Pran was the biggest name in this film. Others in the industry were surprised he declined to work with his friend Manij Kumar's films as a villain over this role. Everyone here is generally new and not established. Pran simply declined his friend saying that he already committed to this film and he won't betray a commitment, even if the director and actor are both new.

So the reason Pran, your Sexy Red, had red hair is that he is playing a person of Afghan origin in the film. Its stereo typical but many such folk dyed their hair with henna and it turned it red. Its a tradition and is still done by many in the sub continent.
Yes the scene in which Pran and Big B first meet in the police station and Big B's dialogue is iconic and so is Pran's song "yaari hai imaan mera...."
Yaar btw, is another word for Dost, in Urdu.and Yaari is friendship or dosti.
Loved that you both liked this film. Its one for the ages.

I am so happy that you guys LOVED it. Now you’re definitely more than ready to watch Angry Young Men based on the writing duo Salim - Javed who also wrote the screenplay for this movie.
Yes, Pran is iconic. He was one of the most respected, successful and highest paid Indian actors of that time. His career spanned over 6 decades and he is over 22 years elder to Big B.
There are so many Pran movies that you could watch. Parichay (1972) starring Jaya, Jeetendra & Sanjeev Kumar, directed by Gulzar can be a good choice. But that was inspired by the Bengali movie Jay Jayanti starring Uttam Kumar & Aparna Sen, which itself was inspired by The Sound of Music.

@Korbin, that’s not a red headed Indian. The character of Sher Khan is supposed to be an Afghan or Kabuli (meaning from Kabul - the capital city of Afghanistan). His look, getup, accent, costume, hair - everything is inspired by the Kabuliwalas (sellers / vendors from Kabul / Afghanistan) who used to frequent India a lot during those times.

Very glad you guys watched this movie... Two great movies you need to watch one day, are also from late 70s is Muqaddar ka Sikandar and Shakti. I really think you guys will like those, as you both have great perspective on the budgets and acting styles of older movies.
