I think it was 2017 when the shift started internationally. After that they were just everywhere and dominating.

I think in Korea, it was probably Blood Sweat and Tears that really propelled them. They started getting more fans after I Need You, but BS&T made a serious impact.
In terms of JK, I know at some point in the past he had the flu bad enough that doctors wouldn’t let him perform. Idk if it was this comeback although it would make sense. He did look pale during one of those stages, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it was.
And yes, they take it seriously about having all of them. As they always say, 7=1.

The shift for them to become very huge was DNA, in 2017/2018. That is when they became very popular in US.
The new documentary of their entire career BTS: Monuments Beyond the Star, on Disney +, explains all the history. You should definitely check it out, the episodes are very short like 35 min each but is very good to know how they become what they are today, and the struggles that they when through
