Boy's Planet -Episode 5 Reaction

Just re-watching boys planet with you! My gosh our Boy Haru in XLOV got screen time in here! I never noticed him until now. I also am discovering how much of a Riu fan you were from the beginning!

omg yes definitely! i think when i focus on personality, it’s not just “likability” or charm, cuz as you said those are subjective. and there’s not just one kind of personality made for being an idol. some of my favorite idols don’t have outgoing or loud personalities (like yoongi from bts or vernon from seventeen). but i also think it’s important to see who’s got leadership qualities, who’s proved themselves to be hardworking and determined, how well do they work with others, do they seem compassionate? and unfortunately, there is a lot of editing so some trainees never get to show that side of them on the show, while others get a lot of focus :/ so talent is gonna come first. but if i’m looking at two people who seem pretty equal in talent, then personality is often gonna be the tiebreaker for me. i guess good examples of how i decide would be my top 3 (keita, zhang hao, and sung hanbin). all of them have a LOT of talent so they would be in my top 9 or close to it anyways. and theyre all versatile, have a lot of confidence without seeming arrogant imo, and have consistently good performances. but the reason they’re all in my top 3 and not just top 9 is cuz they all seem to lead well, they’re often shown comforting other trainees, they come up with good ideas, they continue to get better. meanwhile there’s other trainees who i think are talented, but i just haven’t seen enough of them imo. like yeah you’re good at singing/rapping/dancing, but so are all these other people. so what makes you different from them? its too bad a lot of stuff is edited out, cuz i’m sure a lot of them DO have those qualities and it’s just not being shown by the production team

Oh gosh, this is a whole load of words, but I hope you can understand my point/perspective.

If you value both, your way of doing things is good so keep doing what you’re doing. I should rephrase what I said. I do think personality is important to some degree but if there are trainees that I like based off first impressions with only personality rather than both personality and skill, I’d rather choose the trainee regardless of who I like that displays their skills or at least shows they’re improving enough to acquire those basic skills rather than on the trainees that don’t have anything more than personality to offer. It’s one thing to like certain trainees, but it’s another when deciding who is the best candidate for debuting. I think of it like how an employer might think of it. Skills are objectively easier to determine and measure, while judging based off personalities is more subjective and ambiguous (idk if that’s the right word to use but I hope u get what I’m trying to say). But also, what even is the right personality for an idol? We probably all think it’s being extroverted and outgoing and/or just loving performing or being in front of cameras, but it’s not limited to just that. Of course having a good moral compass and just like not being rude in general are probably the most important aspects of a person’s character especially when they’re constantly in the spotlight but when you think about it, it might be easier to determine those aspects of one’s character after debuting. You don’t know their personality/character for certain until you get to know and learn about them more, and I think that debuting gives more chances for you to learn about each individual than a survival show where they’re facing similar situations and emotions time after time (you’re at most seeing one or two sides of them rather than the entirety of their personality/character as everyone is more complex than being just limited to one or two sides they show) until the relief (letting go of whatever emotions the show got them experiencing) that comes after the final results of who debuts comes into play. Also, there are several successful groups that consist of introverts and shy individuals, so imo, there isn’t a universal answer to what the right personality for an idol would be. And since we get a say in things, I believe it’s more based on preference than what/who the best fit would be.

yes yes, I agree with this! I definitely have some favs that I voted for based on personality but they had at least the base level pf either being able to dance or sing. Of course, I know they are trainees and people do forget that they aren't gonna be amazing right off the bat but I agree with you- having both is important~!

Chris

for me, they need to have both. like, i won’t even consider voting for someone if they don’t have at least a certain base level of talent. but all my top picks also have personalities that i like and think are suited for being idols. to be an idol, it’s a given that you have the talent. but being an idol is MORE than just your talent. i feel like a lot of people only vote based on one of this things :/ (but obviously if you’re only gonna pick based one one main criteria, talent should be above personality).

Isabella N.

I totally agree with you! Of course, I love the boy's personalities and wish I could vote on that alone but, as you said, they need to have at least the basic skills down to debut! Maybe I'll end up eating my words a couple episodes out but it makes me sad seeing some of the best talent at a super low rank ):

Chris

SAME SAME SAME. I vote for him every day- I love him ):

Chris

To answer your question about “who’s voting,” I honestly think a lot of people aren’t voting based on skill alone but rather based on like personality maybe or things like that. However, I personally wouldn’t do that as I think skill is one of the most important factors in selecting and allowing certain idols to debut. If they don’t have that skill initially, then all I hope is that they work hard to build up at least some of that skill.

Sami Casingal

I need Haruto in this debut group!! The variety content this man would bring! And Lip J is the best judge addition to Boys Planet ever, she is the momentttt.
