Emails I Can't Send Analysis- "Emails I Can't Send"

I discuss the expert way Sabrina Carpenter uses diction to establish exposition and characterization in this opening/title track from Emails I Can't Send.

I think the bit about "As they say in Chicago, he had it coming" is some studio chatter from the end of the recording session. My assumption has always been there was some discussion with her producer or whoever about how that was a really heavy song, or how she's really putting her dad on blast, and she responded with a joke to break the tension (sort of a "Yeah, I'm publicly calling him out, but he asked for it by cheating on my mom and traumatizing our family"). I wouldn't really consider it part of the lyrics of the song. There's a moment at the end of another song on this album that is definitely her chatting to someone in the studio afterwards and seems to be mostly included because it's cute and funny.

Yes!!! I love how you can totally feel the speaker's trauma throughout the song!

this is one of my fave album opener and also one of my fave song. the way sabrina writes about trauma is so palpable that it feels like i was there in the story. trauma is not about what happened to somebody, it's about the effect it left them in. so excited for this new journey with you!

I already love the storytelling so much!

The storytelling in this song is amazing not only as a song, but as an album opener! She basically starts the album explaining where all the feelings, self sabotage, doubt, etc came from in the first place and the goes on to talk about how these things manifested in her other relationships. Simply genius. One of my favorite albums of 2022 by a mile!!
