Hi Everyone,

Join me this Thursday at 10AM Pacific Time for the 116th weekly live Q&A.

If the above link isn’t working for you, here is a link to watch directly on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfLjnbwQl1k

Here's how it works: bring your questions to the comments below, the community forum, or save them for the live chat.* Questions can be about anything you want - guitar technique, music theory, gear, songwriting - your choice! Also, feel free to link a video of you playing if you have a technique question!

I'll do my best to answer your questions and give examples of how you can practice developing skills related to your question.

Keep in mind, you can always watch later if you can't make it live! Check back a few hours after the stream for a numbered list of each question and a timestamped link to each answer.

*Please note: you may need a youtube/gmail account to ask questions in the live stream, but you can watch without one.

Hi Scott. Lee from Leeds in the UK. I have just finiahed the CAGED System Basics and I am feeling so much confident about CAGED, Triads an Intervals etc. I am about to start CAGED Basics II next week. Are there any songs that really illustrate CAGED in action for ‘noodling with Traids/Arpeggiating’. I appreciate that the ‘raison d’etre’ of SPJ is not for example ‘Guitar 365’ and I am loving the Music Theory but are there any plans to demistify some classic songs in terms of Music Theory?

Let me try this again with my glasses on.... Hi Scott, I'm currently working on a song in the Key of E Major which has a D major chord in the progression. I'm guessing this is a "borrowed chord?" Can you explain how borrowed chords work and if there are any ways to know what works and what wouldn't. For example that D chord would normally be diminshed in the key of E correct? Can you make the #7th chord in each key major and it would sound OK? Thanks

Hi Scott,

Wayne Barlow

Hi Scott, hi chat! Recently I had a conversation with my piano teacher that kinda made me feel lost. I always find motivations in learning songs or having some kind of small victories that make me want to strive for more. So I asked him if he could recommend a song that I should learn. Instead, he told me the following scenario. Say I learn 50 songs and then someone comes to me and says "Let's jam in A minor". What are you gonna do? His point being that I should shift the time I put in learning songs to learning theory and understanding music on a more complex level. I definitely want to understand music on a complex level but learning songs I love, especially on guitar, has played a big part in my daily routine and generally served as a fuel for studying. What are your thoughts on this and what do you think I should do?
