Hi Everyone,

Ray asked if it was important to play with other people and what to do if you can't find people to play with.

Jeff provided some lyrics and asked for tips on how to put music to lyrics

Ray says "please explain the mysteries of sweep picking"

Wayne asked about how to play more musically

Daniel was looking for tips on how to use the CAGED System to solo over the song "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac

Luke asked about bluegrass flatpicking - what is it and how does it work?

Aaron asked what "playing in the pocket" means

Daniel asked if I could break down Valerie by Amy Winehouse for a solo as well.

Great section on noodling.👍

Stephen Sharkey

Thank you

William Siler

Ok I will spend a little more time checking it out.

William Siler

I teach a lot of those bass concepts in my 2 bass lessons!

Scott Paul Johnson

Are you going to do anymore bass lessons? I see you have some bass lesson already. Your doing some of the things on that bass I would love to be doing

William Siler

Hi Scott, this is my first live office hours. I’m enjoying the live interactions.

William Siler

I think that’s the live version you’re playing, I play the other version, I’m not too sure if there’s a big difference in key

Daniel Torres

Yeah I’m not too sure of the key unfortunately I just play along to the original song

Daniel Torres

If you have time could you do the same thing with Valerie by Amy Winehouse?

Daniel Torres

Molly Tuttle has some instructional videos…

Mason

Awesome!!

Daniel Torres

Hi Scott, I've heard the term used "playing in the pocket", what does it mean?

Aaron Harvey

Hi Scott, Could you do a simple explanation of flat-picking bluegrass and how to get started playing / thinking about it? I have searched youtube but not really found a great place to start. I love how it utilizes the open position cowboy chords and would like to start playing it more, but I don't know a lot of ways to practice besides following a tab and copying phrases. This is my first office hours, really cool! I've been a patron about 5 months and you've really helped me finally get a grasp on guitar music theory, thank you!

Luke Stanley

Also, have you heard of Tim Henson and/or Polyphia? He used things like harmonics, slides, tapping, and hybrid picking. It would also be fun to see maybe a reaction video if you haven’t heard the song “Playing God” by them.

Daniel Torres

Hey Scott! I’m going to be performing Dreams by Fleetwood Mac with my band and was wondering if you could help me come up with a simple yet effective solo to add on at the end of the song? Also could you show me how I can use the cage system to my advantage here as far as playing F and G throughout the neck? Also, have you heard of Tim Henson and/or Polyphia? He used things like harmonics, slides, tapping, and hybrid picking. It would also be fun to see maybe a reaction video if you haven’t heard the song “Playing God” by them.

Hi Scott, As I've been working my way through MTM's I was wondering what the best way to ask questions. As the lessons Im working on currently date back towards 2020, if I ask a question on that Community Forum thread, would it be seen or is it better to bring it here to the weekly Q&A? Whic brings me to my second question, as I've been learning the theory behind music and playing/improvising with other guitarists, I still find myself not playing musically. It still sounds like I'm just playing notes,(at least correct notes now!), instead of musical phrases like you seem able to do so easily. Does this come with time? I have been practicing triplets, slides, bends, ect. Thanks for the help!

Wayne Barlow

Please explain the mysteries of sweep picking.

Any tips for how to create a groove/melody when you already have the lyrics? Here are some the lyrics to a song I am working on now: Short Ride I knew my begging was in vain when I saw you get on the plane. It seems there just wasn’t time for our sweet song to find a rhyme. (Chorus Start) We took a short ride in the dark, a desperate search for a spark. It felt too soon for it the end. It hurts so much to lose a friend. (Chorus End) On a blanket spread in the park, we joined our bodies in the dark. Pheromones and laughter at first sight Several weeks until our first fight.

Jeff Sanders

Hi Scott. How important is playing with others to your guitar development? If you don't have a guitar buddy what's the best way of replicating this?
