Hi guys, I'm Rod. I took my first guitar lessons around 30 years ago but quit after only 2 years. Since then I have been playing guitar (chords), just learning songs or parts of them because I seem to get interested in playing a song and never complete it for some reason. This year I made some new friends and I started meeting with them and just jam (try to)for a few hours and it's so much fun. Much better than spending days trying to figure out a song and play cover songs. So I decided I wanted to learn guitar theory and try to understand what I was looking at on the fretboard and expand my playing. I joined weekly lessons with a guitar teacher and I started to improve and learn a few things, however, sometimes I end up getting confused when I get presented with something new, such a new scale or arpeggios etc. I learned these scales but I had to know how and where they were coming from. I was not getting a plan and kept flipping back and forth through the book. Yesterday,I came across one of your videos on YouTube(Chords in a Key) and I was blown away how good you explained scales, minor and major chords and triads and how to extract these from. I felt that only from that one lesson I have understood so many things which before were so confusing to me. This is exactly what I was looking for and I am so excited to be here. Thanks Scott.

Hey, I'm G. I learned some pretty insipid stuff 25 yrs ago and wasn't inspired to put the time in to develop more until a couple of years ago when I got hooked on learning fingerstyle - as an absolute non singer it was fulfilling to be able to add melody and bass lines and to be able to play 'songs'. I've since got into playing folk and some blues and whilst It's been great to develop technique there remains a dark and empty void of my understanding around the theory and what notes I'm playing and why they work.. Hoping to eventually play confidently up and down the fretboard in various styles but it's a long long way to go. Always liked your lessons and teaching technique, so glad to be here! Thanks Scott.

Hello. Have dabbled with guitars since my teens, but seems I decided to wait until my 60's to try and improve. I have both acoustic and electric guitars, and my current leaning is towards electric. With a couple of retired colleagues we play together (but not perform) and occasionally record and post original songs up on Soundcloud, but they're pretty basic. I have been impressed with Scott's YouTube content, particularly stuff around CAGED, so decided to sign up and try and develop my playing. I'm probably at a kind of mediocre intermediate level, and want to get a lot better at electric rhythm playing, including being able to mix in some simpler solo stuff. Good to be here!

Hi Ben - welcome! Sometimes it's a matter of sitting down with pen and paper to note the differences with chord diagrams and graphs. You might enjoy my practice thoughts series: https://www.scottpauljohnson.com/practice-thoughts Also, don't forget you can ask me anything during the weekly office hours - I've got one starting in 20 minutes here.

Hi Matt! Are you using the Recommended lesson plan? Thats a cool overview. Keep in mind, it's MOST important to set specific personal goals so you don't get overwhelmed with options. https://www.scottpauljohnson.com/scotts-recommended-lesson-plan https://www.scottpauljohnson.com/practice-thoughts

Hi Bruce! Welcome. I hope you're enjoying yourself. Don't forget you can ask me anything during the weekly live Office Hours.

Donal - Welcome and thanks for joining! If you already have a grasp of music theory, you might appreciate the CAGED Basics course, which should really help someone understand guitar if they are proficient in a different instrument. I'm also going live at 10AM Pacific Time to answer any questions - Scroll down to "office hours" to participate

Ben here. Played brass instruments in school (many years ago) and now play many instruments ( but master of none ). Started on guitar last year and taking private lessons, however I was drawn to these courses because of the great tutorials on CAGED notes and scale explanations. I play banjo, and I know there *should* be separate storage for muscle memory, but I often fall into thumb dropping on my guitar and trying to do guitar chords on the banjo. My brain needs a better filing system.

I'm Matt. Been playing guitar for like 30 years, but quit taking lessons once my teacher showed me power chords. as a long time punk rocker, i'm now pushing 50 and am embarrassed to go to guitar stores and just keep playing cowboy chords and Basket Case or whatever...I'm finally back to taking proper lessons. Hopefully Scott can make me a "guitar player" and just just a guy who can play songs!

Hello, Bruce from central TX. At this point I’m finally doing something I’ve intended to do for many years. Already learning lots. But LOTS to learn! ✌🏻

Bruce B.

Hi! I’m Donal from Ireland. I’m a classically trained trumpet player. I taught myself guitar as a teenager after being frustrated by the need to read music to be able play anything on trumpet 😅. I learned a lot of songs in the first few years of learning guitar but haven’t played or learned much in over 15 years.

I’ve played bass guitar in bands for over 10 years without doing any real active/directed learning in that time. That said, I have learned some bits passively from learning songs for cover gigs (stumbled into a few pentatonic/blues scale boxes from many a blues cover gig) and a small bit of writing bass for original bands. I recently started playing lead guitar in a band and have a bit of free time to put into properly learning and understanding what I’m up to. So I signed up here after enjoying a few YouTube videos. I’m really liking the format of the lessons and exercises so far. Thanks Scott for putting it all together 🙌
