2023-10-23 16:38:36 +0000 UTCBeen playing for around 10 years, played in several tribute bands as a vocalist/ rhythm guitar and made some original songs from ear, I’ve never taken lessons other than watching YouTube videos. I’m good at learning a song, tabs and all that but I suck at improvising, playing along with musicians on the go because I lack theory and musical knowledge. So I’m here to get better and hopefully create music while I understand the how’s and the why’s

2023-10-21 19:10:24 +0000 UTCHi all! Been playing for about 15 years! I’ve never taken a lesson and everything has been by ear. Over the past few weeks I’ve been self teaching guitar theory via YouTube and wow did the guitar begin to make so much sense! Love the way you teach Scott! Excited to dive in and really understand why we do the things we do. I’m hoping that theory knowledge will help my creativity. Thanks for having me here!

2023-09-06 17:15:32 +0000 UTCHi Joe, Welcome! Music theory is tricky because the more you learn, the more it makes sense. I'd say move on from the intervals lesson if you get the concepts because the following lessons will make use of those concepts in a usable way. Once you get through the Music Theory for Guitar series, check out a couple Music Theory Monday lessons and my melody making lessons. From there, try a few Community Challenges and see what kinds of issues come up blocking your creativity and ask me about it on a livestream!

2023-09-06 17:13:39 +0000 UTCHey, all! I’m picking my guitars back up after maybe 20 years of letting them sit in the back of a closet. When I was in college, I learned some chords and scale or two, but after that life got so busy. My kids got me a guitar stand last Christmas, so since then they’ve been right there in the living room. I found myself picking them up every day and strumming the same old chords, and I thought, “why didn’t I ever develop past this?” So I was roaming YouTube looking for lessons and stumbled across Scott’s account. It was absolutely brilliant. It’s just been a week or two, but I already understand major and minor scale and chord triads (I could never quite get my head around the until Scott explained them). I’d love to get to the point where I can jam and improvise more freely. I’m working my way through Scott’s suggested curriculum right now. Thanks, Scott! Good luck to you all!

2023-09-03 16:45:44 +0000 UTCHi! What iPad app are people using for the homework sheets? I found Scott's site through the "How to use the CAGED system to play a SOLO" YouTube video. Scott's video was the first explanation that clicked for me! Following the recommended lesson plan.

2023-09-02 00:15:44 +0000 UTCHi everyone, I’m Sym. I’ve been trying to teach myself for a couple of years now. Learnt other instruments as a kid but wanted to get into guitar semi seriously. Feel like I’ve hit a point where learning songs I like is only so satisfying now and want to learn some theory and broader fundamentals. Scott’s YouTube vids on the CAGED system really interested me, so here I am 😊

2023-09-01 21:36:00 +0000 UTCScott is the best. If you don’t understand something in a video, just ask him and he’ll explain it to you in a way that makes sense. I’ve found watching a video a few times helps to suddenly get something I didn’t before.

2023-09-01 17:26:33 +0000 UTCHi Joe, Welcome. I too am working through Scott's recommended lesson plan. When I hit intervals, I thought what in the world is the relevance of this, but decided to, in Scott's words, "trust the process". So I just keep practicing and push through to the next lesson. And every once in a while a light gets turned on.

2023-09-01 15:50:31 +0000 UTCHi, I am new to trying to learn guitar through videos and was looking for someone that had some sort of structure. I found a recommendation for Scott's music theory videos so I decided to try them out. I've watched the intervals one a few times now and still don't fully grasp it but that is not the fault of the videos. I am probably an advanced beginner who has a lack of fundamental knowledge. I enjoy writing lyrics and would hope to accomplish some abilities of adding guitar to my songs without having to collaborate with someone else.
