Hi everyone, my name is Phil, and I added learning the guitar to my bucket list several years ago, following my retirement from the Automotive Industry. I've been an ardent fan of Scott's, since discovering his YouTube genius back around 2018 .... looking forward to my time here on Patreon, thanks for having me!!!

Hi Ola! Go through my Music Theory for Guitar course, and then the first few Music Theory Monday lessons and start digging into the community challenges! From there ask me where to go if you can't find interesting stuff in the lesson archive!

Scott Paul Johnson

Heyy im ola i have some and i mean barely any music theory knowledge. Id like to be able to improve my improvisation and soloing and also song writing. Excited to be a part of this patreon group

Hi Mike - If you're in a similar boat to Steve, check out what I told him! When it comes to jamming, you'll get MUCH closer with Music Theory for Guitar and Music Theory Monday - AND you can ask me anything during Office Hours on Thursday mornings 10AM if there is something else you'd like to learn.

Scott Paul Johnson

Hi Steve! Welcome. Writing as practice is fantastic! If you're feeling like you don't know how to practice, I strongly recommend perusing my "Practice Thoughts" section. https://www.scottpauljohnson.com/practice-and-technique-dashboard I suggest sitting down and writing out your top three goals as specifically as possible. Sometimes when people say they want to feel like they are making progress, it's because they feel like they are getting pulled in multiple directions and none of those directions are too exciting to them. Setting hard goals related to what you LIKE (not what you think you should do) can make a huge difference.

Scott Paul Johnson

Hi Steve (and Scott). I'm in a similar boat as you and others in that I can play a bunch of tunes using open and barre chords but would like to have a better understanding of theory and specifically how to solo over any chord progression. I play in a band (sing and play rhythm guitar), but I'm like a deer in the headlights if we're just jamming and I need to improvise (just can't do it). I'm looking forward to getting to that next level. Cheers!

What’s up, my name is Steve and I’ve been playing for about 16 years off and on.. but in the last 3 years I’ve really been trying to progress & not just play riffs. So I started learning a bunch of full songs, write my own stuff as well but I’d really like to learn theory and learn to improvise.. I can keep time and play all barre cords and open cords. I’ve got the C major scales down from your lessons.. I guess I just don’t know how to practice, if I’m being honest lol.. when I sit down to play I usually end up playing the same stuff or just writing my own songs. I try to learn new songs often as well cause at least that way I somewhat feel a sense of progress. I just want be a better guitarist. I want to be able to play with other musicians at some point and start a band. I signed up with your patreon because i seen your YouTube video on theory basics and I connected with your teaching style, especially considering my theory is at the absolute basics.. your explanations are clear and concise. Okay, now I’m rambling lol..

Hi Justin! Welcome! I think you'll find good company! There are a lot of folks here learning how to write music via music theory! Once you get ito "chords in a key" you'll have enough theory info to start doing Community Challenges

Scott Paul Johnson

Hello I'm Justin I have been playing for a few months. I just want to improve so I can playing something that doesn't sound like nails on a chalk board. I know a few chords and scales. I really want to understand Music Theory as it is a guidebook to creating music. I started with lessons but I moved and now am trying to learn by myself.

Hi Ralph! Welcome! I was born in Tacoma, grew up in Lakewood. If you're looking to level up songwriting and music theory, you've come to the right place. I've got the fundamentals up through the more advanced stuff. Follow the recommended lesson plan, or just work through Music Theory for Guitar, then at least 7 lessons of Music Theory Monday. From there you'll have enough theory to write music for the rest of your life! https://www.scottpauljohnson.com/where-to-start If you have technique questions, you can ask me anything on Office Hours! Every Thursday at 10am Pacific.

Scott Paul Johnson

Oleg! Welcome! Check out the start page! If you're a campfire guitarist, I think Music Theory for Guitar is a great starting point: https://www.scottpauljohnson.com/where-to-start

Scott Paul Johnson

Hi Justin! Welcome - we've private messaged already and it was nice to meet you! I am ALL about self expression as a top priority. If you're on a mac, check out my GarageBand series, otherwise I can bring you into the PC group on the forum. https://www.scottpauljohnson.com/patreon-content-blog/2021/4/26/garageband-01?rq=Garage https://www.scottpauljohnson.com/where-to-start This is a great place to start - especially the recommended lesson plan - if you don't have much theory under your belt. Theory is basically the grammar and semantics of the music language. I have plenty of general lessons about how to start making music, and I strongly suggest checking out the Community Challenges to start writing right now. You need a starting place when you get into songwriting.

Scott Paul Johnson

Welcome Dave! Thanks being here! I hope you enjoy your time. The start page is a great place to start, but let me know if you have any other questions. https://www.scottpauljohnson.com/where-to-start Weekly Office Hours is where I go live to answer all Patron questions - it features my full range of tools from camera guitar to recording software, to my array of 5 cameras to help me get my point across

Scott Paul Johnson

Hi Esther/Mo, Welcome! Thanks for joining. If you don't know the basic yet, I suggest checking out Music Theory for Guitar first, then diving into Music Theory Monday to understand maj7 and 9 chords! https://www.scottpauljohnson.com/music-theory-dashboard Then once you've gotten the hang of some concepts, you might want to check out the Rubiks Cube series to see all the permutations of 7th chords, if that sounds fun: https://www.scottpauljohnson.com/guitar-theory-dashboard For ear training, practice writing music - it helps THE MOST because you're interacting with all the theory that everyone else uses - I suggest Community Challenges, which you should be able to do after a few Music Theory Monday sessions. Find one that looks easiest first: https://www.scottpauljohnson.com/community-challenges I also have this nice little course that will get you going on ear training: https://www.scottpauljohnson.com/practice-and-technique-dashboard I hope you enjoy your time here! I've got a live Q&A every Thursday at 10AM where you can ask me anything you want, even if I have a lesson about it!

Scott Paul Johnson

This could easily be used to describe me as well!

Ralph

I have been playing on and off for about 20 years but never really advanced beyond the beginner stage; however, this year, I have started playing quite a bit more and I am looking to improve and advance in technical skill, songwriting, music theory and performance (so, everything). I live in the Tacoma area of Washington State.

Ralph

Hi, I’m Keith I have played on and off for decades, pretty much self taught from books and a few lessons here and there. Missed a lot of fundamentals. I now have the time and want to go back and learn the things I missed or just didn’t understand when I was a lot younger.

Keith Newsome

Hi, I'm Oleg. I started learning guitar years ago from YouTube videos and never levelled up from a campfire guitarist. I am here to learn and practice more complex stuff and build my theoretical foundation and overall guitar/music understanding. You're a great teacher Scott and I am happy to be here!

Oleg

Hi all. I've been playing for a few decades on and off, but recent life events made me want to dig deeper into music as a means of expression and communication. I'd like to be more fluent in playing lead and rhythm guitar. I'd also love to learn more about music production/songwriting.

Justin B

Hi, Im Dave, used to play quite regularly until Life saving op a couple of years ago. Really rusty now but getting back into it now I have clearance to do so. Came across your channel on Youtube easy sign up.
