Office Hours Q&A 149 | THURSDAY Feb 15, 10AM Pacific Time

New here? Wondering where to start? Click here for my Patreon start page, or here for my recommended lesson plan.

Hi Everyone,

Join me tomorrow, February 15th at 10AM Pacific Time for the weekly live Q&A.

If the video above isn’t working for you, here is a link to watch directly on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7-0F8PsCIA

Here's how it works: bring your questions to the comments below, the Office Hours community forum thread, or save them for the live chat.* Questions can be about anything you want - guitar technique, music theory, gear, songwriting - your choice! Also, feel free to link a video of you playing if you have a technique question!

I'll do my best to answer your questions and give examples of how you develop skills related to your question.

Keep in mind, you can always watch later if you can't make it live! Check back a few hours after the stream for a numbered list of each question and a timestamped link to each answer.

*Please note: you may need a youtube/gmail account to ask questions in the live stream, but you can watch without one.

Dear Scott Paul Johnson,

Jana Misch

Hey Scott, What is the picking pattern you use 20mins into the lesson? x

Emma.T

Hey Zachary! I do these every Thursday at 10am pacific, but feel free to fire off questions right here!

Scott Paul Johnson

Hey, when's the next time your doing one of these? I have some questions about how to use music theory in an atonal/noise context! Thanks brother

Zachary Argo

Great explanation. Scale = letters, Key = paragraphs of chords and notes, Song = story?

Greg Moreau

This is, as always, eye-opening! Thanks, Scott.

Greg Moreau

Scott! I didn't know about this, as I'm new! G. Moreau here: "Reminds me of a question: I'm practicing along with your lessons doing scales, but that gets boring (don't hate!😉), but are there standard chord changes we should practice to break it up?"

Greg Moreau

Hi Scott, I'm working on the major and minor scales in Music Theory for Guitar. When I have an E major scale, would the E and A chords be EM end AM? And in the E minor scale, Em and Am? Or am I lost here. Tks

Hi Scott. I'm still having trouble hitting an open G chord then immediately striking a D without the D being out of tune. When holding an open D chord, where does the force to fret the strings come from? Do I pinch with the thumb at all or is it more pulling my left elbow back like barring a chord?
