Office Hours Q&A 153 | THURSDAY, Mach 21, 9AM Pacific Time

New here? Wondering where to start? Click here for my Patreon start page, or here for my recommended lesson plan.

Hi Everyone,

I'm feeling great! Join me tomorrow, March 21st at 10AM Pacific Time for the weekly live Q&A.

If the video above isn’t working for you, here is a link to watch directly on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gYpkjpb7_M

Here's how it works: bring your questions to the comments below, the Office Hours community forum thread, or save them for the live chat.* Questions can be about anything you want - guitar technique, music theory, gear, songwriting - your choice! Also, feel free to link a video of you playing if you have a technique question!

I'll do my best to answer your questions and give examples of how you develop skills related to your question.

Keep in mind, you can always watch later if you can't make it live! Check back a few hours after the stream for a numbered list of each question and a timestamped link to each answer.

*Please note: you may need a youtube/gmail account to ask questions in the live stream, but you can watch without one.

Hi Scott Paul Johnson, I'm so glad you are back in business ... I know everyone was missing you. -I have so much trouble to handle your patreon platform, and I didn't feel well myself why you're getting my wishes and greetings a bit late. I only can enter your patreon over an email or I leave the page on - I'm so useless hahaha, and last Tuesday I couldn't let you know I wouldn't be able to join you ... I'm looking so much forward to it to seeing you live again. Lovely greetings to you ... Jana x

Hi Scott, I’ve appreciated a lot the last Live Lesson where you made a template you called ’template test track’. I’m new to Logic Pro so I struggle to follow your pace. Would it be possible that you put this template (with or without the audio) downloadable for the Patreon community ? It would help me to understand and test all the choices you made so quickly. If it’s not possible, forget my cheeky request. Anyway would you please expand about the compressor ? I’m completely at loss when you fiddle with it. Thanks a lot!

Hi Scott! I’m so grateful I found your channel and Patreon. Thanks so much for all of your help already! Best advice on how to memorize yet separate scales as I learn them? Just learned the C Major scales and now as I’m learning the A minor scales, I’m thinking how am I going to memorize all of these but keep them separated in my mind. Should I play open C Major then open A minor and continue down the positions or should I play the C’s all the way through, then all of the A’s. Hoping this makes sense and you can help a girl out! Thanks again!

Hi Scott, I am new here and English is not my first language. If you don't mind I have few questions with regard to Pentatonic scale. As i understand there are 5 pentatonic scales. I am just wondering if they need to be played in a certain order like you explained in your YouTube Caged video or you can just randomly mix the order of scales . Also, in your very first Youtube video, you were explanting that Pentatonic scale is in two keys simultaneously minor and major, is this only applicable to the scale that you demonstrated or any of pentatonic scales will be in two keys. Last one, if we are soloing for example in key of C minor , using pentatonic scales # 1, can we jump to other pentatonic scales or this would be considering going out ot the key. Thank you so much.

Hi! Here's my question: I play guitar and write songs ... lately I've noticed that a lot of songs I love (by other artists) are composed in open / alternate tunings. Do you ever play around with open tunings (particularly for songwriting purposes) and/or do you have any lessons on this topic? If not, maybe could make some? Even just the basics on how to play with a few open tunings, basic shapes, etc, would be awesome! Thanks for all your great content!

Hey Scott, new Patreon subscriber here but I'm really enjoying your content! You're the first teacher I've found who actually explains HOW to use the music theory you just taught in very realistic and practical examples. I want to ask: do you have any advice for proper hand positioning while playing barre chords? I've found that if I play barre chords for too long, it really starts to get uncomfortable. I've tried adjusting my thumb position, using less pressure, etc. but I find that it always ends up hurting after a relatively short amount of time. If you have any suggestions or advice, I'd love to hear it! Thanks, Zach
