Office Hours Q&A 182 | Lyric writing, Electric vs Acoustic, Daily Practice

New here? Wondering where to start? Click here for my Patreon start page, or here for my recommended lesson plan.

You missed this one, but you can always ask a question on the Office Hours community forum thread.

Here are the timestamps:

Question 1 - Tyler inquires about a followup to Ben's lyric writing process from the "Lyrics with Ben" lesson.

Question 2 - Ray asks whether I prefer electric, or acoustic guitar and if I have a favorite.

Question 3 - Ray asks what an ideal daily practice routine looks like.

Office Hours Q&A 182 | Lyric writing, Electric vs Acoustic, Daily Practice

JACK! Since I'm in the process of moving my office until the end of the month, let me answer here: Start by getting to know ONE shape, specifically getting to know which note(s) in the shape are the root note. Pick a few backing tracks to practice figuring out how to play along using ONE shape (all major chords for CAGED Basics I, or Major and minor for CAGED Basics II) - Then once you get the hang of it, add the shape next door and see if you can come up with variation you like, for example: two strums of C shape for E major chord, then one strum of A shape and one of C shape for the B Major Chord, then two strums of C shape for the A major chord. Happy to do a video example once I'm set back up, hopefully within a week here.

Don't know if I've missed the boat on this now, new here. Loving the lessons, but really struggling to apply the CAGED basics lessons in the practice. I feel like I understand it on paper but very quickly get lost on the guitar. Should I be memorising the notes o. The neck or the shapes of each voicing? Should I just keep practicing and let things settle in with time? Or am I missing something? Thanks!

And what does an ideal daily practice routine look like?
