Nerd³ Catches Sonic Mania

Hello!

I've just finished up next week's video and I'm exhausted. I'm not going to reveal a sausage of it until it releases but it was viciously tiring to make. You'll probably see why when it comes out.

Anyway, enough about that, here's this! Pretty self explanatory week, the only real difficulty was finding and arranging public domain stock footage to tell a story very, very quickly. Finding sound effects for all that was easier (most of the footage was silent) and speeding it up so it sounded fast, but was also recognisable was great fun.

Oh and that exhaustion at the end was legit. To run in Sonic VR you have to run on the spot. To spin you crouch and to jump you jump. I did that for 35 mins and then lay on the floor for another 30. The things I do for my art. :p

Anyway, that's all. There will be more during the next podcast episode!

Very excited for next week. :D

- Dan

PS. My fastest time is now just under 32 seconds! \o/

this video was so much fun

one of my fave moments

Stan Gaskell

It was very enjoyable that you brought back the mreasts joke

Diarmaid Ó Braonáin

There's always that point you get to, when you've set yourself a difficult goal, where you stop making progress because you've been playing so long that you've somehow fucked up the muscle memory required to Press Start to Begin.

Felice Enellen

That was kind of horrifying to watch. I loved it.

Silver Thompson

"I hope you've got loved ones, because I'm really going to fuck them up" was the first point I lost it. Good job with the edits, Dan. Having watched the stream when you first started trying this, I thought I was prepared, but this was a different level. I do have to ask, though - did Rebecca check on you after that final agonized scream in the VR run?

Diane Frank

I adored this. although there's a tinge of sadness because I'd love to see an old school "plays" of this given it's an Actually Good Sonic Game and seeing you enthused by the old Mega Drive sonic games was great.

Hard no from me. After five minutes I started skipping through, I really have no interest in watching you swear at Sonic. The VR bit was interesting to see but it looks horribly uncomfortable to play and wasn't enjoyable to watch either.

Mike Jones

Not to mention the excellent editing, a brilliantly put together video

MrAndyTF

Loved this video, made me laugh a lot! From the early dismay in attempt 19 through to the almighty victories of beating your best times through to the sterling VR adventure... what a ride, phew! Your poor controller, your poor legs

MrAndyTF

fun!

i like the way none of the vehicles in the journey section of the video were even slightly alike. also i think ive had an ad play before every one of your post-comeback vids, which i find endlessly amusing

amazing from start to finish

VERY well done, Dan! Nice editing ;)

Supersonicclank

I managed to get a headache watching the VR part so I can only imagine how you felt. Funny as fuck video though! Cheered me right up after a stressful Saturday.

Joshua Aarons

This was absolutely hilarious. Great work!

Owen Reid

This video was amazing by the way. Honestly, by the point you ended section one, my attention was waning, and wham, in came the second bit. Hilarious and genuinely unpredictable. Well done :)

Stan Gaskell

How is that movement in VR though, I'm super interested. Does it feel like you're actually falling or is it just disorienting?

Stan Gaskell

I think the best of nerdcubed playlist needs updating Dan, amazing vid!

Daniel Auty

This video is, in my opinion, one of the best on the channel. The part in VR was consistently hilarious.

Zion Aitken

At 4:58 did you edit out a "I will find you and I will kill you"-type whisper? It sounds like you're dragging the mic closer to your mouth XD

Snizzbut

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=td8S8IBpQsI World record is 27.92s. You'd be between 30th and 36th on the leaderboard with a time in the 32s.

Aaron Place

I love how this is the second video in a row where Dan dies at the end because he had to do exercise. Are we just watching Dan on his fitness journey?

Thomas Reeves

Great video Dan! That Sonic VR is quite amazing.

Have you reconsidered uploading your videos in 60fps? I know you said before you won't to be considerate of people who have poor internet, but it's been a few years now and the low framerate is becoming increasingly jarring. Watching this felt so bad because not only is sonic fast, but it's fast with a ton of small repeating textures and was really uncomfortable to watch. Given that YouTube clearly shows no interest in including a 30/60fps option for HD, at what point would you consider it time to increase the video size for the sake of framerate?

Martin M

You've outdone yourself on this one. Brilliant

A++++ very good would watch again

Jeremy Abel

Blimey all of the editing is gold.

That edit at 6:12 was pure brilliance.

Actually you are a speedrunner! You're doing an RTA IL run, which stands for Real Time Attack (Individual Level). Welcome to the club! Here is your leaderboard: https://www.speedrun.com/sonicmania/Green_Hill_1 , you are in the 30's somewhere
