Nerd³'s Friends

Maybe one day I'll work out exactly how to release a video at the right time. Anyway, spoilers for this follow!

Next week is the busiest week of my year. It's packed to the rafters with tonnes of secret projects and lots of travel. That meant that this week needed to be a simple, quick video so I could get back ahead.

This video took 4 days to make. Whoops.

Last week someone linked me to this game (Mindshow), I tested it and immediately knew I had to make something with it. Basically, you pick an area, pick a "puppet", take control of them and hit record. Your movements and audio are recorded and you can then do it again with another puppet to interact or use a camera and shoot the angle you want. Footage is recorded directly to your hard drive. It's a very nicely made game.

The downside is that the Vive's in-built mic is dreadful quality and I needed to keep it on to make the mouths move. That meant I need to record the audio like I would with any VR video and add that and all sound effects back in manually, and then tweak the vocals to help separate all the voices. It took forever. Almost two forevers.

As usual, no part of this video was written. I opened a location, looked at the puppets, worked out who is doing what here and then ad libbed as many skits, quips and bits as I could with them. Each character needed and intro with quick characterization and an outro that capped off their story. Some got arcs, some were just one line filler. I think it worked.

Not everything I recorded worked though. The episode was 21 mins long but I recorded just under five hours of footage all told. There were a lot of character/place combinations that didn't really work as well as bits that didn't work. I could totally Anchorman 2 this and make another video from the footage (but we all know I won't :p).

My favourite bit to do was the Ted Talk parody. Just pause like William Shatner and don't really say anything that means anything. I think she got like 90 mins of footage.

OK, that's all. There may not be a podcast this week but, like I said, it's going to be a busy one for me. These advent calendars won't open themselves...

- Dan

PS. Next Week... The Nerd³ Awards!

Ok. I now really want to hear that 90 minute Ted-Talk!!!

I had a bit of a mixed time with this one. There were placed I loved this because I absolutely got where the humour and angle was coming from (captains log, Ted parody, richest dog), Equally there were some skits that just didn't quite land for me (first time comedy club for example). But, comedy and stand up is individually subjective. There's some clear influences coming through from some of the artists you've touched on in the pattern casts and it does make me curious what was cut, enough for a "best of the rest" bonus sidebar for the patrons perhaps? Either way, what do I know. I'm simply a faceless commenter shouting into the void of the internet pretending to have some semblance of interesting commentary hoping to hear an echo to inflate my own ego and sense of self worth. =) Keep up the good work Dan, even when it doesn't land for me personally the fact that you are clearly enjoying yourself with these videos far more then your used to makes backing the patrons worthwhile.

Simon Steel

Have you ever thought about releasing stuff like the 4 and 2/3 hours of footage we never saw on Patreon? Even if it isn't that funny it'd be cool to see the junk that get cut.

The Ted Talk parody was absolutely fantastic. It was altogether a great video also.

This was a great video, excellent syncing, fitting characters, and great humor. What I liked the most, and what I really miss elsewere is the breaking down in different scenes that keep coming back. I don't know what the name of that style is, but I love it, keep it up.

Freek Jansen

Sorry, it took me a while before I got to watch the video (a certain someone had suddenly injected a massive amount of videos to my watchlist).

I

Xelias

Loved this one. I love how high concept the post reboot videos can be.

Xelias

Bloody brilliant, really enjoyed that! Thanks Dan

MrAndyTF

This was absolutely fantastic. My girlfriend and I were laughing out loud for a lot of it, really good stuff.

Mike Jones

Great video, respect the amount of work that went in :D

Simon Paffett

If the Nerd³ Awards aren't on the 9th of December, we riot.

One of the best videos I think ever

I loved this video, I've watched it back about five times now and it still cracks me up. :')

The bit that made the video brilliant was the spot on gestures and cadences (ie the acting was superb). Things like hand gestures or looking back at the camera, that kind of stuff was all timed perfectly. The different cadence of voice was what really made this good however: the best most obvious examples are the comedian and the TedX talk person (Do you know what happens when you reply to every spam email you get for a month? That's a real one). The voices are ok but the way they talk is perfect.

Josh (destofworlds)

My favorite video of yours yet. I loved each one of the characters personality. Especially enjoyed how, unlike facerig, you move the characters around the environment. It made them feel more real.

Robert Pearson

I've generally enjoyed your recent reboot more than anything any other youtube entertainer has done. But, even with that in consideration, nothing in recent memory has made me laugh harder than this vid! keep up your work at your pace, i'm glad to add to your salary! :)

Gavin Ironside

this was amazing. its been a while since I've audibly laughed during a video

That was another great video, Dan. If this is what "going weird" means - I don't want to see sane.

ThisDamnScotsman

That beautiful callback to the mum phone calls from the start of this descent into madness 👌

these are bloody brilliant. I think i like agent 0 best. completely lost it when you see his fingers pop around the plane edge into frame. that was a great wa to set up that shot.

Hype justified. Can't pick a favorite bit/person/dog/twinkie-minion/etc. Many kudos for you eye, your editing, and your insanity. And if we don't get "Nerdcubed's Enemies" at some point in the future, possibly led by the robot, I'm going be very sad.

Diane Frank

Have you checked out Tooth and Tail yet? Its an RTS that might be right up your alley, you can play with a controller and it would be a good game for a live stream. Hope to see you play it. Either way great video.

YourJelly

That would require him to write it ahead of time.

YourJelly

I was in stitches during the Ted Talk parody and loved the awkward comedy guy. Thanks for such a wonderful episode! :D

NERD CUBED AWARDS YESSSSSSSSS

You're in your prime

Loved how you just went rolled with all the characters, making up little stories for them! Especially liked the "This used to be a gaming channel," at the end - nice to see the interesting direction you're taking! Keeps me on my toes! ☺

Jeez, reading the comments it goes to show how easily people are amused! This was hard to watch and didn’t even make me crack a smile which is a shock because so many of Dan’s other videos have had me laughing out loud. Since the meltdown everything has changed and it’s no longer funny, it not even entertaining. I’m glad to have supported you on here when it all went South on YouTube and I’m glad to see that your Patreon support is big enough that it makes no difference now I’m going to remove it and support someone else. I hope to see you return to form so I feel that I can come back and support you once again. Please don’t let the easy and regular Patreon income make you phone it in once a month.

evilution

Huge fan of both you and Nick Park so of course I loved the 'creature comforts' style of this. The '7' joke in particular was fantastic! This video actually made me laugh aloud in a room by myself! A* as always!

I've noticed the Patreon funds have been going up a fair bit recently, which is nice to see. Also, with the book on the way, part of me is curious to see how the number of followers / subscribers translates into book sales. Will it just be a limited number of super loyal fans who get it, or will it be your very own "Carrie"? (When Stephen King got a call saying Carrie was sold, it turned out that he got WAY more than he expected.) Maybe not quite that, but you get the point.

Damien Letham

Captain Jermax was absolutely hilarious and you have me genuinely believing it was an obscure Star Trek episode. Also, did Rebecca draw the thumbnail? It looks like her style so give her props if she did, it looks great

Dylan Verbeeten

Fantastic video, the editing, the jokes, it was just great. I loved the Facerig video from a while back and this is just that +1.

If this becomes a recourring thing, and I think it would be good, perhaps a way to get round the vive mic would be to have other people (Ashens, Matt, Rebecca) record for character before hand. Then play that very loudly in the room as you record the acting so the vive hears that - and replace it in the edit.

the skeleton, ted talk and crashed captain with robot are all hilarious, every time they came up it got a laugh out of me

Morgan Deighan

The EA part of the Ted talk got a good chuckle out of me. Looking forward to the awards next week!

Joshua Aarons

This has got to be your best work yet. I was sceptical of you doing yet another reboot when you went offline, but it's fast becoming a shining example of unique humourous content. Keep up the top top work Dan. Thanks for being a funny fucker. :D

Woodchip NZ

You should just took the remains of those 90 minutes of the Ted-Talk lady and release them for us or something. :P

Tustin2121

Ted talk lady was spot on. I've seen so many 'inspirational' talks just like that one. Loved this.

Ruth

Once again, this week's video has become one of my favourites. Oh, and Dale's stand up bits were geniuinley painful to sit through, so thanks for that.

Jack

After the reboot every video has been the kind of video taht would have gone in the Best Of playlist and it's great

Brilliant. This was absolutely Brilliant. You have made something astonishing here. My favorite character was definitely the Ted-Talk lady. Can't wait for the awards next week.

One of your best videos Dan, loved the gaming channel joke at the end

Max Tal

I loved this, would so be up for this to be a recurring thing!

Narmatonia

Fantastic work again Dan! Back to true Dan Comedy! 10/10!

Stuart Barber

That was amazing, very similar to face rig but was way funnier and better set up. well done

Morgan Deighan

Yeah you need to get so many train rides to ashens next week :)

Shawn Lindsay

I loved this video, it really reminded me of creature comforts!

Jacob Bartynski

This was an astonishing video, and I cannot thank you enough for it. Enjoy fucking about with Ashens!

Well Read Nomad

Can't believe you could make it in just 4 days I wouldn't make that in 2 weeks! Laughed the whole way though, just brilliant comedy

Conor Moran

This by far exceeded my expectations when you said in the podcast it would be a more normal plays-like video. This was a fantastic video and the quality of work you've been putting out has been top notch since the re-boot. You've touched on this before that a lot of people didn't want you to change, but it seems like every time you change and do what interests you, it just keeps getting more entertaining (in my opinion)! So keep doing whatever the fuck you want, because in the end, we want you to be motivated and passionate about the stuff you make because it always seems to come out better when you're passionate about your work.

Rio Sewell

Totally worth the extra time it took to make. :D

Damien Letham

Up there with Destiny 2 as one of the best. So fucking funny, I don't normally laugh out loud much but I'm surprised my neighbours haven't come knocking either to complain or check I haven't died.

These videos keep getting better and better

Evan Inness

I loved the smug looking robot, it was adorable

Aaron Place

The Talk-X talk and the Captain bits were probably my favorite moments.

Thomas Reeves

This was a lot like FaceRig huh?

It was one of the best.

Plus that whole 7 joke was just amazing

This was an amazing video everything. Makes it better knowing you ad-libbed the whole thing. Good work!

Owen Reid

Awards next week!!! Can we have a micro transaction shit awards or pr awards? Something along those lines. I loved this weeks video reminds me of the facerig but even better.

Valthexus

I enjoyed this so much! This is my new favourite video of yours, pretty much since facerig...

Adrien D

That was genuinely one of your best videos ever!

TheShyBiGuy

This video was insanely good, loved each situation and character you made. I adored the caption at the end "this used to be a gaming channel"

Absolutely loved it, but you missed a great joke at the end " I remember when this channel used to be about video game" from Gat outta hell video xD
