The Patreon Podcast - Episode 20 - The 10 Greatest TV Moments

...and now for something completely different.

- Dan

The entirety of Westworld Season 2 episode 8 had me in tears. Barely a word spoken in a language I know and yet so clear and beautiful!

Elias Lipka

I've watched the good place and am now returning to this podcast.

Henry

I find a very powerful moment in TV was in The West Wing when President Bartlet was taking the 23rd Amendment and the Speaker of the House came in and said "you were relieved of your duties mr. president"

I think there's 2 other moments in m*a*s*h* which I remember. 1st is in the last episode when Hawkeye "realises what he's done" is probably the best way of putting it 2nd is in one of the Christmas episodes when they have to buy someone time so their kids don't hate Christmas. The moment he dies is one of those 'oh shit' moments I'll never forget

Zoey G

My fav line would have to be another from the good place, jasons reveal at the end of (i think) episode 4

Hey Dan, I just started reading Redshirts by John scalzi and wondered if you've read it or heard of it? It seems like a booked you'd love as it's a comical sci-fi based on star trek.

I was trying to think of a good quote from from stargate SG1 and immediately went to the very best line: 'i am a man of few words'. A joke that never fails to make me laugh

Peter Barrett

From X-men?

Patrick Jackson

Interesting list Dan, enjoyed that. Your title fooled me into thinking there would be some python. Did you consider the end of Blackadder Goes Forth? That would have been in mine. "Well I'm afraid it will have to wait" means so much!

Patrick Jackson

omg im so happy to listen to N3 podcast again

Hey Dan I recently discovered a game I think you would like. It's called while true: learn() it is an excellent indie puzzle game that teaches about machine learning and only costs 7 dollars. I would love to see a video about it.

Jackie

"So this is how liberty dies, with thunderous applause" that will always be special to me

Patrick Biggs

Could you do a Rolling Line stream or maybe streams or even better a completed series

Birchwood

Are you a fan of It's Always Sunny? I started watching it a few days ago as per my brothers suggestion and I'm already st season 4. I love it!

Dan, you've mentioned elsewhere that you're not excited for Solo. Why is that? Its written by Lawrence Kasdan who has a pretty good history including The Lego Movie which we know you adore.

My most memorable moment is when Picard sits down at the poker table and says "I should have done this a long time ago" in the final scene of All Good Things. I remember being in tears because of that, granted it was like 2 am.

Tyler Kelley

Hey Dan, I've been watching Steven Universe for the past few days thanks to yours and Rebecca's recommendations and love it! Just wondered if either of you recommended anything else similar to it i could watch?

D&D Lemur

Dan, always wondered. Why do you think us Australians are so nuts and live in a hell? Most of the population lives along the the Eastern coast which in a lot of peoples mind is the most beautiful place in the world!

My favorite line in all of cinema (keep in mind, I haven't watched a whole lot of movies) is without a doubt "You must be Peter." from Spiderman: Homecoming. The fact that the scene starts off with Peter and his mom's conversation reassuring Peter that he knows exactly what to do and that he's got everything planned out perfectly in his mind, combined with the upbeat music sets up the tone of the scene so perfectly for what follows. The absolute sucker punch of a scene delivered to the crowd, where the music stops the second you can make out that it's Vulture answering the door, and you share the horrifying tension that Peter feels all the while Vulture is just completely unaware of the situation is just so fucking impressive. The car scene that follows, along with this scene are just brimming with a spectacular performance by Michael Keaton, and the complete absence of music until Vulture realizes that Peter is Spiderman creates such an overwhelming feeling of stress; it's just spectacular. I know I started gushing about the scene more than the line, but man, I will always hold that line in my top 10 of best movie lines.

franklywarm

Hey Daniel, I just recently bought Hitman the full version and FUCK! I’m disappointed, you were 100% right on that game but regarding that do you have any suggestions on games I could buy and love?

Garrett

Dan! Being the Sorkin fan that you are (Studio 60! Best season of tv ever!), have you seen Sports Night?

WC the Comedian

The moment that hit me the most in recent years is at the end of Attack on Titan, Season 1 Episode 4. The show has a lot of problems, most of them inherited from the source material, but the moment where the Colossal Titan reappears, and Erin just turns around and throws himself at it while all his friends are panicking, that's why I stuck around as long as I did with this train wreck of a production. I will say though, it only really works in the dub. Maybe it's just my issues with language, but I didn't get any of the same feeling watching the sub. Not to mention that the wording was just wrong for the situation in that version. Probably just me though.

I WISH I could continue watching the Good Place (after your glowing recommendation on Twitter), but American Netflix doesn't have the latest seasons and apparently won't get them until September, because NBC wants us to watch it on live TV and fork that. :C

Tustin2121

My favorite would probably be Capaldi's "sit down and talk" scene in Doctor Who

Joseph Henderson

I also still cry in Donna's farewell from doctor who.

Chloe McNamara-Bates

I think the moment that stuck with me was in DS9 season 6 ep 11, Waltz when Dukat driven mad and goaded by Sisko just whispers "Yes! Yes! That's right, isn't it? I knew it! I've always known it! I should've killed every last one of them! I should've turned their planet into a graveyard the likes of which the galaxy had never seen! ...I should have killed them all." Its such a hateful and horrible plea for Sisko's validation, and the way he said it as part of the proof as to why he isn't an evil man. "I should have killed them all." ...uuuuuuuuuuuugh

Chloe McNamara-Bates

there has only been one line in a TV show that has actually killed me. its in the vampire diaries final episode, stefan opens the school doors and theres lexi with his coupe "well, that was incredible" and then stefan just goes "I was feeling epic" and that just killed me. i had held it together until that point but after that i was just dead

Matt

Hey Dan. What's your opinion on The Orville. I've just watched the full first series in one day and in my opinion it's the best series of star trek.

Craig Wright

There are some fantastic moments in Bojack Horseman, an absolutely depressing yet hilarious adult animated show on Netflix about a washed up actor.

Franklin Goodman

My favourite Doctor Who moment comes just before the 10ths regeneration, when Wilfred is trapped in the chamber and the lines "I could do so much more" and "It would be my honour Wilfred" are the ones that get the most reaction out of me.

Morgan

Defiantly not the greatest TV moment but I re-watched that scene in Stargate Atlantis when Atlantis takes off for the first time in HD and I think I had an orgasm when I saw that.

Thomas Reeves

The moment that hit me the most was the moment in Grey's Anatomy when Meredith realises it's George that was hit by the bus. I realised at the same moment as her and had pretty much the same reaction. I miss George :(

I love the last moment of Blackadder when Blackadder says: "Good luck everyone" and then blows his whistle and goes over the top.

Douglas Hodgson

I want to add another one from Scrubs. Don't know the episode. "Remember what you told me: Once you start blaming yourself for peoples' deaths, there's no going back." "Yeah, you're right!" The pain in Cox' voice. It hurts to watch him make the decision then and there to call it quits (for a while).

Bjorn van Rijszen

If you put “satire” as a tag on your video apparently the bot will skip it and you will not get demonetised

Ollie Goggins

Actually to be fair there's probably about 6 different numbers I could say for that show. I have a real soft spot for it

Tom Chaney

Crazy-Ex Girlfriend: Rebecca's Reprise always did it for me, then they reprised Face Your Fears and did basically the same thing but with an extra year of emotional momentum behind it and an immediate outcome that doesn't have the same gratification right off the bat, but you understand that this is the character you've grown to care about finally making healthy choices

Tom Chaney

Not a TV show, but the music video of Joyner Lucas his "I'm sorry" video is really powerful imo

'Please Like Me' Spoilers You probably haven't seen it, so I'll keep out names, but Please Like Me is a fun, awkward comedy about a 20 year old guy (Josh) becoming an adult. It’s really nicely written and shot, I think it’ll be right up your street. In the last season, this episode starts off quite happy and bouncy; indicative of the show, and midway through Josh goes to visit a character who he is very close to, as is the audience this far into the show. He finds this person collapsed on the floor, with a note in hand. The whole tone of the show flips out of nowhere. He lifts their arm to confirm his fear that they are dead, and it drops like a stone. “Nope nope nope nope nope…” Josh says as he looks desperately around the house for someone else to help him deal with this. No one is there, and it’s the point Josh realises he has to grow up and deal with this shitty situation on his own. It goes on from here to spreading this wave of shit, and we see how his friends and family react to this person’s death, and figuring out themselves how to comfort a close friend who is broken. It’s really worth watching. There’s only 4 seasons, 6 Eps per, and it’s included with Amazon Prime Video too.

George Farren

Better call saul is definitley as good as breaking bad, you will be suprised :D, although season 1 took a while to get going

Ben Frost

The last few minutes of The Good Doctor's final episode. "And then, with a little luck, you and i can go to the super bowl next season." Trust me, if it can make me (Someone on the Autism spectrum) cry, then you know how good that scene is.

It's scary that I've listened to Dan so long I knew instantly that when you said "best episode of anything ever" was West Wing and recent was The good place.

Mark Fletch

[STARGATE SPOILERS] My two favourite moments are ofcourse stargate moments, 1) Stargate Atlantis, end of S3 episode called Sunday, with Rodney on the edge of the pier at the end of the episode talking to becket and the last moments of SG1 episode called hero's where they are watching the tape oh, and when they reveal who died.

I love the reveal of the master in “utopia”, DW season 3. “I am the master”! It gets me every time man.

ben seviour

Mine would have to be episode 18 of ‘The British Railway stories’, where all the steam trains are being scrapped and the engines are telling their last tales before death. “Treasure your time on these rails Stephen, because they can be taken away in an instant”.

Jarod Chevin

Just watching your GTA V heists series and realised you never down the Pacific Standard Heist. It is the 'biggest bank robbery' to ever happen. Will you do the heist. Also would you consider doing the new Doomsday Heists for GTA V

Who is your favorite non-Picard TNG recurring character?

Jed Cole

Love your picks, I personally am biased towards the MASH and the doctor who. The third of my hold trinity of television would be Yes Minister/ Prime Minister, but it's not really a "moments" kind of show.

Well Read Nomad

any one liner from jack o'neil

The 2 moments that come to my mind during this podcast is from House of Cards (US) and BoJack Horseman. I can mention the moments without spoiling the shows but if you've seen the shows you know what these lines mean. HoC Chapter 14 FU:"Did you think i'd forgotten you?". BoJack Horseman S4 episode episode 12, Diane: "...,but i'm so tired of squinting"

"You're not there, are you, Cloister? You've never been there! You don't exist!" and then the entire scene following it from the Red Dwarf episode "Waiting For God" is the first moment that came to mind. A great mix of comedy, emotion and genuine philosophical depth. And like you say, Lister shows in that scene that he genuinely cares.

And just in case you miss my last comment, have you ever seen Dr. Strangelove Or: How I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb. It's one of my favorite films. One other thing is this changed genres during pre-production, Kubrick originally wrote it as a serious thriller called red alert, and then it was changed into a political satire after he realized how stupid the cold war was.

Johnflipper5

I have two moments (not the most obscure (and potentially not even top ten worthy) but I'd say they're pretty great). One is the end of Journey's. End in Doctor Who, after Donna has to go, where Will says he'll think of the Doctor every time he looks at the night sky. The other is Sisko's closing "I think I can live with it" speech from DS9's In The Pale Moonlight.

Barnable

My favourite TV moment was at the end of the DS9 episode "Far Beyond the Stars" where Benny (Sisko) Breaks down because all the racism he has suffered throughout his life becomes to much for him to bear. I always found it strange how in that episode they essentially made a new character and made everyone care about that character in 45 minuets. I will never forget the words "I am a human being"

Harry Turner

It's not a line but it's a moment. It's the one second can last forever momenf from season 7 the episode named Tick Tick Tick. Just that moment where all sound just turns off is just so powerful.

m0sifer

Love some of the recommendations on this list! Totally going to check out a few new shows based on some of the shows you brought up. One of my favourite TV moments for me is Doctor Who, the series 2 finale where Rose and the Doctor say goodbye. Series 2 was the first series of Who I saw when it aired in 2006 (I went on to watch Series 1 simultaneously as I fell in love with the show after having watched 'New Earth'), and I immediately became attached to the Tenth Doctor and Rose, and their relationship. I saw the Tenth Doctor as a father figure and was one of the first characters I fell in love with, and similarly with Rose (despite looking back on all her flaws now) who meant so much to me as a child (which sounds weird, but. I got attached easily). So.. for Russell T in the finale to rip that away, Rose determined to stay with the Doctor for the entire episode, willing to sacrifice ever seeing her family again just for the Doctor, for that to be then taken away right at the end was just heartbreaking. I still can't watch that finale without getting emotional. The music, David Tennant's acting, Billie Piper's acting, seeing the person I idolised cry, the way the Doctor shouts as Rose is getting sucked into the void, a character who finds ways to help everyone, powerless to help as the person he cares about most is in danger, and the "I'm burning up a sun just to say goodbye." Fuck, that killed me.

Chris

My favourite line is probably the final line of dialog in Cowboy Bebop: "Bang..." But to talk about everything that happened before that to make it such a great scene would be spoilers so go watch the whole thing because it's a masterpiece!

Dylan Parry

It's not an obscure one, I know. But, Scrubs. My TCW. "Because nothing sucks more than feeling all alone...no matter how many people are around." That's the line that hit me most. I actually started crying. Big ugly crying. But it's the whole scene and the one before it, where he goes absolutely mental on his friends and colleagues. It's so powerful, and I can't really explain why. But... I think you see the real JD there. And everybody is so shocked, even Cox (maybe especially Cox), because they know JD isn't the real JD. That's just him putting on a mask, because he's insecure. But he's put himself out there.

Bjorn van Rijszen

Really good idea ignoring the internet for infinity war spoilers, I found out some before I saw it and it made a brilliant movie a bit less good

Your kids don’t like falafel

My favourite TV moment has to be in the last series of How I Met Your Mother, the episode How Your Mother Met Me with Tracey leaving her boyfriend inside the cabin in the middle of a proposal to go talk to her deceased boyfriend. It's just traumatic and causes so many problems for her, I've cried so many times listening to her rendition of La Vie En Rose, it's just so much struggle that's given to a character we've known for 20 episodes and so much background that you know you're nearing the happy ending and yet it's so genuinely sad. I think that episode and the one after are the best ones of the show and makes it entirely worth watching, I love it.

As soon as you said Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake I teared up you bastard.... MASH has so many moments. I think Mine would be when Hawkeye realises the cause of his mental breakdown in the final episode. On a happier note Im currently on holiday dogsitting, and have two lego sets to build (42069 + 42070). What are your thoughts on the Technic sets after building the Porche?

What are your opinions on Mel Brooks

Johnflipper5

Have you watched Arrested Development?

Mike Jones

I can't swallow pills. Lucky my pills are capsules that can be opened. My wife gets the placebo effect with side effects so any new med she gets, I read the side effects and don't tell her what they are so I can look out for them. Perhaps you should outsource your side effect reader here to Rebecca?

StrandedPatrick

Hey Dan I'm in Uni and up to my head in maths revision I don't understand so obviously I'm quite stressed. Is there anything you do to stay calm/not stress out?

Dylan Parry

Hey Dan have you seen Sovietwomble play besiege with his friends on twitch? If not, the online mode is the best Robotwars game ever made and I obviously thought you'd be interested in it. (I didn't know it could be played online) You fight in rounds and at the end of every round you get to improve your robot for a few minutes and the round starts again. <a href="https://www.twitch.tv/videos/219911577" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.twitch.tv/videos/219911577</a>

What sort of action would you recommend I take as I am currently stuck in sixth form and hating every moment of it and I have 14 months left to go. On top of that I'm also a self-deprecating piece of shit and where ever I am I wish I were somewhere else.

Douglas Hodgson

I have just started watching it’s always sunny in Philadelphia and it’s comedy genius! The title cards are the best thing! Do you like it? And if so what do you like about it?

Scott

Is just cause 3 still your favourite game or is it bully like in your top 100 games??

Thought it might of been tomorrow

Scott

YES!
