Wow

Hey friends, Austin here!

Last night, we hit our $10,000 goal, and I'm not going to mince words: I'm fucking floored right now. We all are.

Hitting that goal means a few things: First, it means that starting in the next few weeks, we're going to start live streaming a new one-shot every month. This is something we're all super excited about.

A few months ago we tested this out with a game of Lazers and Feelings as part of a live stream marathon, and the result was something that felt spontaneous and loose, and we had a huge amount of fun. You'll hear an archive of that session soon, and going forward each of these live streams will be archived for patrons!

As part of this goal, you'll be helping us to decide what games to one-shot. We'll post a poll soon, but first we wanna get ideas! So please comment here, message us on our Twitter (@friends_table), or email us at friendsatthetable@gmail.com and let us know what games you'd like us to try out!

Hitting that goal also means that we've hit a pretty rad milestone: Your support has let us DOUBLE the amount of episodes that we're putting out month to month. On top of our four free episodes every month, we're now also doing a bonus clapcast, the new live streams, Tips at the Table (which we're aiming to record the first ep of tomorrow), and an episode of Bluff City.

(Speaking of Bluff City, we recorded the first episode last night and all I can say is that SONNY VERANDA DID NOTHING WRONG. I promise this will make more sense soon.)

There's a one more thing that hitting that $10,000 goal means: It's time for us to reveal those higher level goals. So, here they are:

At $20,000 we'll release two episodes of Bluff City a month! Based on the recording we did last night, we're all excited to do more of this, and with more support we can make that time!

At $30,000 we'll do a Friends at the Table live show once a year! This goal is definitely a stretch so we wanted to make it something really special, and being able to get all of us in the same place and to play a game live for our fans is something we'd love to do down the line! Let's see if we get here!

And of course, as you already know, our next goal is $15,000, where once a month, Ill start doing solo streams as I'm prepping for an upcoming session. Watch as I create NPCs and locations, talk through my mechanical and thematic goals for upcoming sessions, and more!

I can't say enough how much this means to all of us. When we first decided to do this three years ago, we didn’t really have much guidance. A few of us had done some other podcasting. A couple of us had never played any tabletop RPGs before. Most of us didn’t even have real microphones. We didn’t know what we were doing, but what we did know was that we wanted to tell stories and play games together. So we took the time, blocked out some time, and gave it our all.

Thankfully, not long after that you were telling us that you wanted us to keep telling stories too. You were sharing your favorite moments from the show with us; you were creating fan art, fanfic, and even fan music; whether through conversation, argument, or begging, you convinced your friends to come listen, and then those friends convince their friends. And week after week, you’ve tuned in to listen to us ramble and roast each other and collaborate and even cry.

Your loyalty and your support means to us everything to us. I said it in the Patreon and I meant it: No matter how good of a job we ever do, the only way we grow—the only way we’ve ever grown—has been through word of mouth. Thank you so much for being not just our fans, not just our friends, but our advocates.

I can’t wait for you to hear Bluff City, to listen to us goof off during a live stream, and for us to answer your questions in our advice show, Who knows if or when we’ll hit $15,000, but I’m already coming up with ways to share my game and story prep with you in interesting and fun ways. And hey, if things go extraordinarily well, I’m looking forward to seeing some of you at a live show one day.

For now, I promise that we’ll keep doing what we do best: Critical worldbuilding, smart characterization, and fun interaction between good friends.

Keep it wavy,

Austin

I'm glad to hear it's come under consideration! The easiest "out" I've been able to consider would be to do prep streams for, say, Bluff City one-shots rather than an in-season main-cast show, but... I leave it in your capable hands. The only Adam prep stream I've watched (so far!) is his Tales from the Loop prep, but that seems like a solid guiding rubric, as far as I can see.

Tomas Herbertson

Hey! All I can say is that we've absolutely thought about this, and that if you'd like to look at a GREAT example of this idea, go check out Adam Koebel's prep streams. As someone who has played in a ton of games with Adam, those prep streams made a lot of viewers happy to see behind the curtain, but also still capable of being surprised! The second a player hits the prep, fresh, unexpected things happen! -Austin

Congrats! I can't help but feel that seeing the GM prep might risk spoiling the magic in some senses, so far ahead--though I admit I individually am deeply invested in /watching Austin implement that prep/ and know largely what is improvised, what is skipped, etc, to level up my own GM game. I feel like the risk comes in from the whole "spoilers" side of things--not exclusively with "to me as an individual listening to this", but also as, say, discourse on the FatT Discord server alludes to concepts Austin had to skip in a session but wants to get back to... I can only speak for myself, but I wouldn't be opposed to a delayed posting of DM prep episodes until after those particular sessions planned for air. This won't eliminate that vector for, uh, community feedback loops muddling the thematic intention/arc of the campaign in motion entirely, but it might help a) provide context and b) limit the potential for damage. Of course the opposite argument is "I want access to the prep before the session airs so that I see it get wheeled out in live motion," but... I don't buy that, necessarily. Having access to the GM prep will inherently change the audience relationship to the show, I can't help but feel--especially on overarching season plot prep, if we're going to get access to that. It feels almost a bit uncomfortable, as happy as I am to have this access--I hope we as a community don't abuse this trust, second-guess Austin's choices, or use the info that is being volunteered in ways that sour down the line...

Yeah!

Seconding World Wide Wrestling

The other suggestion I can think of is 7th Sea (the new one)--interesting setting, and I would selfishly I would like to see how it plays before I dive in with my group.

Michael Boyle

I second Rhys--I would be interested in seeing the group tackle a more traditional style of RPG. If you didn't want to do something truly traditional like D&D, two ideas I can think of are something using the GUMSHOE system (I have had good success with Fear Itself for doing horror-movie one-shots) or (and this is my personal hobby-horse) Torg with its unique combat pacing mechanics and card-play.

Michael Boyle

I included the 200 word RPGs in my email to them! And actually specifically called out ORYX as something that could be right in their wheelhouse!

Tim Howes

I love seeing the different games you play but it would be interesting to see you do a session of D&D, Pathfinder, or Shadowrun or something just the once. I think it would be interesting to hear you talk about these games and what you think of them in general. Maybe you could dip into past versions of games to show what old tabletop used to look like? Obviously I'd never suggest you make a series out of any of these, you seem to have a different style, but it could be a really interesting one shot. Then again maybe you could just talk about them on tips at the table in general terms? I'm rambling.

Rhys Grimshaw

First off - congrats on reaching that milestone, it is well deserved! You all do amazing work. <3 Second, regarding which system to try for the live games - I think seeing you take on Monster of the Week might be fun, but I'll also say I like David's idea of trying one of the 200 Word RPGs. :)

Anna Landin

Ten Candles, please!

Joe Bryant

Has anyone suggested trying one of the 200 Word RPG Challenge games? MECHANICAL ORYX or maybe Deconstruction?

David Allison

Oh yes, this would be brilliant!

Joe Barnsley

Honestly I would love to hear you all try World Wide Wrestling... but from the description of Bluff City I guess that's probably already on your to-do list, so :D

Joe Barnsley

Oh no wait, I would kill to hear you guys play Paranoia. Or possibly its L&S hack, Lasers and Treason.

Justus Goldstein-Shirley

I'm not sure how easily you could condense this down to a one-shot, but I can't think of a game I more want to hear y'all play than Monsterhearts.

Brita Dorfman

I'd LOVE to hear you all do a session of the Shab-al-hiri Roach if you're in the mood for something utterly absurd and filled with irreverence. It's very much a proto-Fiasco (and thus commiseratly rough around the edges mechanically speaking) but it imparts a certain kind of delightful mayhem. I haven't been able to find any good examples of a play session on youtube or otherwise, so it could be a great way to bring some exposure to a lesser known game!

Lisa Jordan

I was just coming to to suggest everyone is john, but played through a prior NPC. "Everyone is Lazer Ted" comes to mind.

Robert

I highly recommend A Scoundrel in the Deep if you're looking for one with two people. The intensity and visual aspect of the game would be really great for a livestream. Here's a link: http://ascoundrelinthedeep.com/

Jairus Elarbee

I think it would be fun to see a game of Everyone is John http://imgur.com/a/l51P3#0

As for game suggestions, I have a soft spot in my heart for Dog Bear, a card-based Metal Gear Solid microgame with random character traits like "eternal cigar" and "secretly a dog".

Dana Lexa

Action Movie World is damn near the top of my list, you play as actors making a movie and character death is no big deal. Playbooks revolve around acting archetypes and moves are all about selling lines and stunts without looking cheesy, or at least looking the right kind of cheesy. You make a movie, the movie's out, and you can carry the actor's playbook to the next movie, so this game would go great with a series of one shots with a persistent cast

Wes Bruce

I'm so happy about this! You guys deserve it! And you should absolutely play Ten Candles, which is a one-shot survival horror game in which every character is doomed to die. Very emotional and fun in a horrible way, especially with the buy-in that you guys have. And you might have fun with Andrew Gills' Girl by Moonlight, which is a hack of Blades in the Dark and Monster Hearts that they are play testing right now. Magical girl anime style, extremely inspired by Madoka.

Jenn Tharp

I started listening to Friends at the Table a year and a half ago, and it reignited my interest in tabletop RPGs (and especially in more narrative games like DW, BitD, etc), which also lead to meeting a group of players that have become great friends. So not only have I loved the show, I can safely say it improved my life in a significant and material way! I'm so glad I have the chance to support you now. Thanks for everything!

I found out about ~~SKULL WIZARDS OF THE CHAOS CAVERNS~~ last week, which looks like a ridiculously fun 3 page game: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2mQ7IPn-PsqRnBkNkdJZVlHMTg/view

Monster of the Week is a ridiculously fun game to play, you play as different types of monster hunters. It's very 'Buffy' and it's rule system is based on Apocalypse World, so it's pretty easy to pick up.

Jesse H.

Please play Honey Heist http://imgur.com/gallery/Zpg4G

SuperBiasedGary

came here to say the same! also, superheroes are inherently a good fit for one-shots

John Scovic

I'm so proud of you and so happy for you!

Vida Starcevic

Oh man, World Wide Wrestling and Apocalypse World would be great one-shots for you guys!

Justus Goldstein-Shirley

A couple of systems you guys could check out are in Spaaace! by greg stolze which is a betting based space operator game? It's really goofy but also really adaptable which can be fun!

Jess

it makes me so happy to see you folks getting this support, you deserve every bit of it!

ennis mckelvie

Check out Masks - it's a powered by the Apocalypse game about teen superheroes dealing with emotions. Seems like it would be a good fit for the group.

Friends at the Table Live is the ultimate Train Day

Aslee Graves

Well I guess I pretty much have no excuse to not go to a FatT live show. Heck yes.

William T. Carpenter Jr.

I'd honestly love to see hyper angsty Monsterhearts as much as that would rip everyone's souls to shreds

Alexis Davin

Congratulations! The World Wide Wrestling rpg could be one hell of a thing. Bluebeard's Bride also looks great, if a bit (a lot) more intense.

Tom Graves

Sonny Veranda is the best FaaT name! Also, how about Rockalypse for a one shot? Fate-based, angsty teen bands and the apocalypse :) Oh, and congratulations, you totally deserve it.

Jane Del

why did this make me cry :') i'm so glad you guys are getting the support you deserve

Angelina Fernandez

Monsterhearts 2 and Coriolis would be good one-shots, I think! So happy for you all!
