Almost entirely irrelevant but I think my favourite Palm look is that brief transitional period when her attempt at charm has well and truly worn off but she hasn't totally slipped back into caricature yet. Think pic 74 on the screenshot reel provided here. There's a period where she's still a conventionally attractive anime lady but with a strong nose and jawline, which is not something female characters in this style are often permitted to have. A shame it is wasted on Palm.

I want to weigh in on the "cougar" line since it's a really interesting example of wasei-eigo, English-origin loanwords that have a different meaning in Japanese. A literal translation of what Gon says in Japanese would be "They say they're called mania." "Mania" here is a wasei-eigo word whose meaning is somewhere between "enthusiast" and "fanatic." It's used for all kinds of intense hobbyists like railfans, car guys, etc. I think "mania" may have entered into Japanese usage by analogy with "Beatlemania" which is pretty neat, but I digress. Translating "mania" as "cougar" makes sense in context but is obviously a little bit imprecise. A common use for wasei-eigo words in Japanese is as euphemisms; they come off as softer and less direct than stating the same thing in plain Japanese. Hearing Gon Freecs say the word "cougar" has basically the opposite effect, where it's a startlingly direct bit of sexual slang for him to be using. So the nuance of the line lands very differently in the translation. That said, other translations like "fanatic" or "maniac" are worse imo. For my money "cougar" is the only translation that holds the scene together, sells Killua's reaction, and makes the line make immediate sense, even if that comes at the cost of a "wait what did Gon just say??" moment.

When Gon emerged from behind the debris and landed a punch, this song played. You know, that time Gon achieved *his* objective, but still lost in the end? I’m sure that won’t become a pattern :P
