It feels like there's something he's forgetting and while he does his best to care for his two new companions, it won't be long before he finds out what's waiting for them when they reach their destination. Fortunately, as Kite ventures deeper into the Ant forest and the Squadron Leaders start to figure out what Nen is, and how they can use it, Chairman Netero and two impressive new hunters are on their way.

2024-11-05 03:50:29 +0000 UTCAfter hearing y'all talk about Kite's whole might makes right speech and having to abide by "the winner's terms and conditions," I remembered the strange moment at the end of the hunter's exam when Netero (or maybe it's Beans) is like "thanks to the efforts of hunters who came before, hunters are now treated very well by the institutions of the world!"

2024-09-06 11:35:37 +0000 UTCJust throwing this out there for Jack’s consideration: Crunchyroll has entirely different subtitles than Netflix that *don’t* include the speaker’s name, so things like the Leol situation can’t happen. The first time I watched HxH I watched on Netflix but now CR is my preferred rewatch platform for exactly this reason. I think they also do a slightly better job of translating things like text on signs, written notes, etc.

So yall were right not to use that one in the screenshot episode!

2024-09-05 17:32:35 +0000 UTCJust one aside I wanted to mention, when Killua says "We were both worth less than a one-armed Kite, that was his assessment," the "his" in that sentence is Pitou, not Kite. He's not saying that Kite thought they weren't worth anything, he's saying that Pitou didn't consider them a threat, and that made him even scarier.

After watching all of Hunter x Hunter because of Media Club Plus back when y'all started the show, I was inspired to start studying Japanese again, and now I've kept it up for nearly a year. I've often wanted to leave little language notes for y'all when I have an interesting tidbit or localization comes up on the pod, so now I'm finally doing it. For this set of eps I noticed: -The two kanji on the little tiles Netero throws to Killua are 行 "go" and 飛 "fly". This wasn't translated in the Netflix subtitles but may have been in others. -Morel is called モラウ (morau) in Japanese, which is the same as the verb もらう "to receive, to get." Typical uses include "to get paid," and idiomatically "to have (a fight, a match) in hand or under control, to take over a game." That plus his swag makes me think of him as Mr. Gets Paid. I love him. -Pronouns: Sylvi nailed the basics of this. Pitou uses the casual first-person pronoun 僕 "boku" which is typically used by boys and young men. Since HxH is a shonen anime, despite being 12 years old, both Gon and Killua use 俺 "ore" which is more strongly masculine and more coarse/casual than "boku," as well as connoting a slight arrogance whereas "boku" is slightly humbling. IRL a 12 year old boy might use the gender-neutral and polite "watashi" with teachers, "boku" with family and "ore" with his friends to look cool and tough. Pitou's character design plus using "boku" creates some clearly intentional gender ambiguity; they/he seems appropriate. Interestingly, Hisoka also uses "boku," which in his case I think is one element of Hisoka's not-so-subtle queer-coding. For both Pitou and Hisoka, having an overwhelmingly powerful and malevolent figure use slightly humbling language to refer to themselves IMO adds to their feeling of predatory creepiness.

I was watching subs on crunchyroll at the time. I can't remember if the Hunters refer to all ants that way, however. great episode as always!!!!

2024-09-04 01:00:35 +0000 UTCUsed to do closed captions for a living - not translated subtitles, but I did occasionally run into situations like the subtitle issues with names here. Sometimes (particularly in cases where there's a lot of stuff submitted at once) the workload is split up among a lot of people, who aren't necessarily in contact with each other and are having to look up names from third party sources and making decisions without enough context. Not saying that was neccesarily the case here, but it's one explanation if it's official subs made after the fact.
