I always read it like this: Shoot’s aura being a strange new color puts the audience in the same place as Killua: “What is that? Is it dangerous? What does it mean?” Given his tendency to gather as much information as possible prior to a fight, it emphasizes how much he doesn’t know about THIS fight. That in turn plays into his Zoldyck-training-reflex to disengage, and makes his internal struggle that much harder.

2024-10-16 12:22:18 +0000 UTCTook me a few days to catch up with the episodes but I have some more language notes for these. Great Pod as usual! Knuckle's powers being called APR and IRS is a very funny and clever invention of the localization team. Their Japanese names are rather different. -The power as a whole is called ハコワレ "Hakoware" which as far as I can tell is just a name and doesn't mean anything. Might be a play on "hack" and "software" since it does kind of hack/hijack one's ability to use Nen, but it's kind of a stretch. -Its subtitle is 天上不知我独損, meaning something like "Heaven doesn't know my loss," which is localized to "Bankruptcy, Chapter Seven" -APR is called ポットクリン "Pottokurin" which is just Japan-ized English, "Pot Clean" or "Pot Cleaning" -IRS is called トリタテン "Toritaten" which is a play on 取り立て "toritate" = "collection (of debt)." The little cat mascot even has a と "to" character on his forehead like the beginning of his name. Overall I love the changes and I think the localization team did a great job with this. When Colt said the King and royal guards were "evil" or "devils" depending on the translation, the word he used was 悪魔 "akuma" = demon, devil, evil spirit. This is the Japanese word for the Christian devil, so it usually gets translated as "devil." Like off the top of my head in Chainsaw Man all the various "devils" are called "akuma" in Japanese. However in many contexts (Chainsaw Man being one of them) "demon" is a better translation IMO, especially since talking about lowercase-D "devils" in English can sound a little awkward and imprecise. Translating the other direction, "akuma" is by far the best Japanese word for what I think most English speakers imagine when they think of a demon. So I like the "devils" translation better, but would have liked "demons" even more. Knuckle's completed shogi tile reads 飛車 "hisha," literally "flying chariot," but the piece in shogi moves like a chess rook so it's just called a rook in English.

2024-10-08 16:43:43 +0000 UTCI really like the parallel between Illumi telling Killua he'll kill Gon one day and Bisky telling him he'll leave Gon behind one day because they *DON'T* match. Illumi was predicting a totally different scenario where Killua was destined to fight and kill Gon, but with the blurriness of memory and trauma Killua feels like Bisky is proving his worst fear right.
