Anna Interview-Part One (Early access, and no ads)

Anna was a long-time member of AVOW. She knew Chad and Tammy Daybell. She knows Julie Rowe, and many other names you'll recognize if you've been following this case since the beginning. She gives us an inside look on what was happening inside the growing belief system and hopes her experience can help others. We hope you'll watch with us tomorrow (Monday) night as well, when we share this with the public for the first time at 6 pm pacific.

Anna Interview-Part One (Early access, and no ads)

Your giggle is the best!

Kim Chapman

Thank you for sharing! May I ask, what was it about the Wasatch thing (sorry I'm unfamiliar with it) that changed your mind about Julie Rowe?

Vixen 9808

Was it late September, 2015 that Julie Rowe peaked? I remember some in my LDS circle were concerned about the blood moon' and her warnings, and when the calamities did not happen, Ms. Rowe went silent til the Daybell tragedies. (see attached as LDS church leaders told membership the 'blood moon' wasn't happening) https://www.deseret.com/2015/9/26/20486333/lds-church-dismisses-blood-moon-worries

DeAnn Kelly

Part 2? Great work on all that you do.

Cindy

Oh, the story about Tammy’s shoes made me cry. I feel enraged for her! She seems to have sacrificed so much. The very thought that Chad would think so little of her as to find her expendable when a blonde bombshell bats her eyelashes at him. It disgusts and infuriates me. I hope his children will see him for what he is, and stand up for their mother. Great interview, as usual! Looking forward to part 2.

Katie Marlowe

If Julie wants to gain back respect she can start with paying back all the families life savings she took stoking fears that were grounded in lies.

RobynB

It goes without saying that none of Julie’s so-called visions have been correct. She is a charlatan of course. But her followers aren’t vulnerable, ignorant outcast. They are at least high school educated and function well in society. Julie is not targeting vulnerable people, just silly, fanciful people. I cannot get too worked up about her antics. There are bigger fish to fry.

Sylvia See

Not in any *meaningful* "leadership" positions, no. Women cannot be ordained, they cannot hold the priesthood, cannot be bishops, cannot be prophets, cannot be in the quorum of twelve apostles, etc...

Tara

Great interview! I appreciate Anna’s observation and history. My favorite is the commandeering of the family night. Ha! Of course Chad thought he was there to enlighten people with his presence and stories. I image at first it had to be a little awkward and shocking. It seems like Anna played it off well. Looking forward to part 2. Thanks to Anna for being interviewed😊

Holly Painter

Yes the LDS church has women in leadership positions. There have been plenty of men who have lost their membership in the church just like Julie did and for the same thing. Julie is out there. Those who follow her delusions are also out there. She hadn’t once been correct on any of her so called visions. Look her up and see how much she charges just for her to do energy work by thinking about you. Spend thousands on her retreats. She has broken up so many families.

Nora Ann

I almost have this grudging respect for Julie R. She clearly had a lot of talents and personal charm. Her books were quite successful (especially since her target audience is pretty limited) and she became a successful speaker. She achieved this in a strongly patriarchal sub-culture and despite her struggles with mental illness. Does the LDS church have women in leadership positions? I am not sure but suspect the answer is NO. Had she been a man who knows what Julie would have achieved.

Sylvia See

When will part Two be? Thanks

Ashley Kane

I thought the part where Anna noted that Julie did not have the doomsday supplies she was promoting was interesting-and glad Anna's common sense kicked in! Was Julie selling the prepper supplies? I looked at a few other religious based right wing sites that promote all kinds of ideology that pit people against outsiders, and then have prepper products like the buckets of meals, tents, etc for sale linked in the "news" site. Fear mongering is big business. Was Julie associated or profiting from selling prepper items? I think her non profit should be investigated-that also sounds fraudulent. I also loved Anna's conclusion that feeling special, or like a chosen one is a very dangerous mind set. Yes indeed!

Jennifer Priebe

I agree 100%. Except I don't think he ever believed any of it. He thought he had found a way to make some money, good for him, but then he met Loti and his plans changed.

Erica A. Zwick

Well said and a great question at the end. We are curious to know more as well.

Lauren and John Matthias

Thank you so much for sharing your experience here.

Lauren and John Matthias

I appreciate Anna’s self awareness. It makes a nice change.

Joanna Mulvaney

This was so good! She’s so normal minded and I love her story. She’s brave to speak out. Who knows what this group is capable of. Can’t wait for part 2!

Fun2 Cruz

I first heard of Julie Rowe during this case. I listened to a lot of her podcasts because I was trying to figure out why people found her so compelling (still haven’t figured it out). But she mentions human trafficking AND soul trafficking in some of her podcasts and she claims to travel to different “realms and dimensions” to conduct soul rescuing. And I’ve wondered if maybe that’s what she claims to use the Greater Tomorrow Relief Fund for, because I assume that soul rescuing can’t really be disproven because it’s not a real thing!

Jessica Donaldson

Checking every hour for part 2 🤣🤫

Cami Hurst

I don't understand the specialness, but I didn't grow up with it. I think that must be a very hard kind of indoctrination to get over.

Lauri Bolland

This is a great conversation. I hope more people like her find you! Anxiously awaiting part 2

Kim Chapman

Thank you for this. MG described CD and LV as fire and gasoline but the progress of the association of CD and JR deserves scrutiny, imho. Chad *learned* from Julie ‘ya gotta make things happen.’ Julie was blatantly ‘give me this, give me’ that while Chad developed different manipulative techniques for persuading people do what he wanted. I suspect one thing he wanted was the gorgeous goddess who adored him and treated him like a holy prophet. If Julie had been willing to regard Chad as her partner/prophet instead of a springboard to her own grandiose enactments…what a different outcome this all would have had. I really would like to know a lot more about the distancing and falling out between Chad and Julie. My guess is it had a lot to do with Chad’s jealousy of Julie’s ‘success’ and her lack of the subservience he [felt he] deserved from his [future] partner.

Lee Howell

Anna’s experience and her openness to share is important, it shows me that not everyone who were in PAP and AVOW were nuts. This is an LDS member that was guided by her church to store food for her family, should it be needed. How these leaders turned it into a money making, power grab, fear based nightmare is a story that has only partially been uncovered, but it clearly shows me not everyone involved had bad intentions. It’s a cautionary tale to be sure. I look forward to hearing more...

RobynB

Looking forward to part 2.

Jean Georgitso

Thanks for sharing this. You did good with the interview Lauren. But wow. 😤 I better stop here.

ShaRee

Ralinda Monga. When you read the comments about the belief system of AVOW and PAP now, has it caused you to think critically about the LDS church, too? How about other faith based religions? I’m so curious. It would definitely make me question everything I’d ever believed,

Debi

Just to add a little something to what Anna said about the church wide “meeting” that would be called. Julie also said that it would be an evening meeting that would start at a specified time and that if you weren’t on time you wouldn’t get in because the doors would be locked at the starting time.

Ralinda Monga

I’m sad to say that I, too, was a follower of Julie Rowe for quite a long time, though not quite as closely as Anna. I was at the Rexburg tabernacle when she spoke and it was literally packed. I think there were even people standing. Her husband and kids were there as well as Chad. I read all of her books and listened to all of her podcasts. I see people asking on Facebook groups how people could get sucked into something like this. I think it was the fascination with near death experiences and that she was promoting preparedness, which the leaders of the church have been encouraging for years. It was about the time that she prophesied about the wasatch wake up that I started to wake up and realize that she was a bit off. I did purchase some preparedness items, like a tent, sleeping bags and campstove, etc. I also purchased some food storage items but I didn’t go overboard like many did and I’m so glad that I didn’t. It was so interesting listening to Anna tell about her experience because it really resonated with how I felt at the time that I followed her.

Ralinda Monga

Absolutely fascinating! Thankyou Anna for sharing… thankyou Lauren again for an amazing interview! Isn’t it amazing joining the dots with people who are genuine and speak truth! Chad is so vain and self serving… once again my heart went out to Tammy… she had a life of having to validate his vanity and feed his ego… and pick up the pieces of his mess? And at the end he betrayed their marriage and her goodness… more and more I learn what a horrible man Chad is!

Melinda Ngawaka

So grateful we can hear this!

Ashley Kane

This was fantastic! Indeed, there's a sucker born every minute, and that is what Chad was counting on. I was quite shocked that the preppers thought they were special and did not seem to care about their neighbors and friends who would be left behind. "A foundational premise of Mormon community is that there is no separation between you and your neighbor. Your well-being is tied to your neighbor’s well-being. " The Mormon Ethic of Community, https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/the-mormon-ethic-of-community Anna provided even more evidence that both Julie Rowe and Chad are charlatans and grifters. I know some believe that Chad was a true believer, but I think he was PIMO. I think he was looking to make a quick buck and get some girlie action on the side. He told his children that his books weren't fiction, they were in fact TRUE because he figured out he could make more money that way. Then he met Lori and that's when things got deadly. JMO.

Erica A. Zwick

The most fascinating part to me was the correlation between Julie’s book success and Chad’s sudden vocal revelation that his stories weren’t stories but were real. He needed his children to buy into this new narrative, and in large part, Tammy too. This would be their new family history and lore, and a way to not only make money but gain the relevance Chad so desperately seemed to need. Chad would go on to essentially share his visions of his children’s important spiritual roles with them which would help them buy in even more to his newfound prophetic path. I tend to think he knew he was making stuff up at first and then gradually started buying into his own stuff, particularly when others began clamoring for his “gifts.” Can’t wait for the second release and thanks to Anna for being so forthright, detailed, and real!!

Melanee Evans

Lots of great info--thanks for your great investigative abilities, Lauren!

Elizabeth Nesbitt

Thank you Lauren. I’m curious about religious “faith”. It calls for spiritual apprehension instead of tangible proof. Are all religious persons that rely on faith vulnerable? Personally, I believe people can survive and thrive without religion. I’ve watched communities of sincere and faithful believers fall prey to conspiracy theories since the 1950’s.

Debi

That part made my heart break. His own son has fallen in to it. I wonder how he is doing.

Nora Ann

Interesting tidbit at the end where we learn Garth knew that his Dad believed his stories to be real. The kids know more about his unique beliefs than they let on. The next question is how much they believe it or not.

Kristina Westbrook

Great interview- well done!

Manganiello Trina

Fascinating. The mind is very fragile. I would appreciate hearing Dr. John address the fragility of a healthy mind vs. someone whose mind is mentally ill to start. How do we know the difference. This woman seems sane and yet she was vulnerable in believing.

Manganiello Trina

I feel so bad for Tammy & her children. Dr John, can you please explain why someone would believe in visions, future events etc? Why would anyone think that Julie Rowe and then Chad Daybell can tell the future? Is this something like people believing in fortune tellers, tarot cards, spells, etc?? And when people believe that their visions are correct, and another persons vision is something totally different, how do the people who believe in those with vision deal with the different visions, and why do they still believe even if the earthquakes and such don’t happen? I know one such lady and it just boggles my mind how she spends money on this type of stuff.

Nora Ann

Much appreciation for Anna’s courage in sharing. It shows yet another perspective of the circumstances and people involved. Especially insight into Tammy. I keep thinking how Chad’s ego must have taken a huge hit when his books weren’t as successful as JR’s and how the financial/emotional strain took its toll on Tammy.

CuriousCat

Dangit Part Two can’t come fast enough!!!!! All of these different interviews from people who knew the main characters in this case well before things turned deadly are so intriguing by because there’s so much that can be learned.

Bludani

Thank you for sharing Anna, I look forward to hearing the second part. The information you share will undoubtedly help others when faced with situations like this. Your relative who felt Julie Rowe had mental illness was clearly “spot on”… I wonder what the “tells” were for them. Clearly quite a few people didn’t perceive that at all.

CuriousinColorado

Very interesting, and a cautionary tale. I appreciate Anna sharing in hopes it can help others, lured by these false prophets. Very informative and another piece of the puzzle.

RobynB

Anna seems very genuine! It seems like she is one of the few that did some critical thinking while involved with these people. Her expereiences and insight really help understand the background of how this started. Thank you Anna for sharing with us and helping us understand!

Aleece Skeem

Thank you to Anna for sharing this. I come away feeling sorrier than ever for Tammy and even the children, being dragged along on Chad’s fantasies of grandeur where he wasn’t even making enough money to keep his family in wearable shoes. Also very interesting that he was in essence looking for an audience and “preaching” years ago. I wonder how much his children have bought into what he’s spouting. Great listen - thank you. Looking forward to the second part.

Evelyn Yallen

Yes!! I have been waiting for this. Just what I needed to get me through the rest of my weekend. You guys are the best!
