Our thoughts on "Tiger King: The Doc Antle Story"

Netflix has another Tiger King sequel out, and we watched it this week--The Doc Antle story. We decided to unpack what we learned at the dinner table. Lauren had a lot of questions for Dr. John. Has anyone else seen the show? What are your thoughts?

Just FYI: a few spoilers are sprinkled throughout this podcast.

Can you believe what has happened!? So happy to hear of his arrest!!! Time for you guys to do that update !!!

I’m one of those who didn’t watch anything about Tiger King. But I still enjoyed this discussion. As always the crickets makes me feel like we are around a campfire on a summer night. Thanks Banks. 😀

ShaRee

I think you forgot to upload the latest video? On the live with Lori you mentioned it

This is completely unrelated.... But I just listened to your Jonbenete episode on YouTube and heard Dr John is looking into WWII..... I would absolutely LOVE a Patreon series on your research!!!! I have been obsessed with WWII for 36 years.... Since I was 12. It would be beyond amazing to get your insight on Nazism and media etc that lead to such human atrocities.

TriciaTheTrucker

Merry Christmas Lauren and Dr John. Thank you for all of the work that the two of you do to bring an educated, thoughtful, discussion to absolutely unimaginable stories. I have stopped listening to most true-crime podcasts except yours because I appreciate your professionalism, knowledge and no drama, quite refreshing. I was wondering if you planned on covering the Alec Murdoch case. I’m sure that he’s a narcissist who seems to have destroyed his family in multiple ways. Plus, his son Paul seems to have been following in his dads footsteps, until he was killed. Power, ego, drugs, murder, etc., it has many layers.

Hi Robyn, thank you for this kind comment. We are so grateful to have you as a Patreon supporter and friend. Your feedback, support and involvement in our community has been invaluable. We are so grateful. We wish you and yours a wonderful holidays as well and a happy and healthy 2022! Thanks again, John

There is always an irony that those who scream the loudest about their personal freedoms are usually the most dependent and childish, as they have usually failed in some developmental stages and are unwilling to explore some of their personal hurts. Children are self-centered and usually more indifferent to the larger community, and they also scream the loudest when they perceive that they may have to contribute to the greater good at their own expense. I would consider most children to be a combination of the elements you described- with a limited capacity for empathy. If an adult never grows up, I would expect the same childish behaviors and attitudes- just in an adult form. Same issues, different manifestation. This a simple answer to your questions, which we intend to discuss in more depth in the future. Thanks for this question. Happy Holidays, John

Lauren and John Matthias

Ugh- tough question. I'm glad that Carole at least allows her animals to roam free in larger spaces. Antle always kept his tigers and large cats in cages to the point where their paws would bleed. Whatever else Carole Baskin may be, she is no Antle.

Lauren and John Matthias

Yes, there's a difference. A sociopath will usually show many (or most) narcissistic qualities, but a narcissist tends to not be as menacing and resort to less criminality than the sociopath. Usually the sociopath is worse- sorry to hear that you may have married one. I hope you are recovering from that fiasco. Happy Holidays, John

Lauren and John Matthias

We sincerely hope you get better soon and recover from the pneumonia- that's a rough road. Glad you enjoyed the Antle (I can no longer even use the term "Doc" with him) Patreon podcast. We wish you a wonderful Holidays as well- and a quick recovery and much health and happiness in 2022! Best, John

Lauren and John Matthias

Thanks Isabel- this comment is so kind and means a lot to us. We look forward to the new year and some exciting projects for 2022. We wish you a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year too- and, of course, a fantastic 2022. Thank you so much for your support and for being such an important part of our Patreon community!

Lauren and John Matthias

This was so interesting! I love listening to both of you discuss these stories. I bought the book "The Sociopath Next Door" a long time ago when you recommended it during one of your early podcasts. I've been trying to understand my past marriage with what I've learned was with either a narcissist or sociopath. Is there a difference?

Thoughts on Carole Baskin????

TriciaTheTrucker

What’s the difference between a self centered bore and narcissistic? Why do people tend to coddle a narcissist? Dr John, if a person uses their “personal liberty” to do something that can be harmful to the whole, would that be considered self centered, selfish or narcissistic? I have to wonder where the empathy for others is.

Debi

I’ll go watch… thankyou ❤️

Hi Dr John, happy holidays to you and yours. Thank you for your amazing work…wishing good things for 2022!

Fantastic that you're doing this one. My heart always skips when I see that you have posted something, and off I go to do my homework just so I can enjoy your Patreon episode as soon as possible. What an evening it has been. As I watched the Netflix show, I kept being shocked and surprised. There was constantly more! Thank you for this discussion. Ever since I discovered your Podcast last year, I feel that I have learned so much - and it's always fascinating, new and unexpected. While I am at it, I wish you all a wonderful Christmas, a Happy New Year - and all the very best for 2022.

Hi Tad, I think we need to import (and Australia needs to export) "tall poppy syndrome"- a great sounding name with apparently positive results. I'm not a big fan of Vegemite, but "tall poppy syndrome" might be just what this country needs from Australia. Thanks for the post, John

Lauren and John Matthias

@Elizabeth (I can’t work out how to reply on here ) Yes I should’ve added I feel really bad for those suffering and if our immigration laws weren’t so strict there are several folk I wanted to adopt into Australia - including Lauren and John lol

Tad Auty

About half of us vote and chant for psychopaths and the other half are suffering the consequences of our cultural imperatives.

Elizabeth Nesbitt

Thank you for the homework of watching this series. I've been home recovering from pneumonia for three weeks and I enjoyed watching the "Doc" Antle story in preparation for your analysis. I enjoy that you two are not always in lock step and genuine discussion happens. Happiest of Holidays for you and your family. Looking forward to hearing more from you in 2022.

Elizabeth Nesbitt

Your culture rewards psychopaths? Hell- you vote for them and chant at them! Well not YOU lol. I’m in Australia and our culture rewards musicians- not really politicians. But politicians have their powers and connections here, but very little respect from citizens. We vote against who we hate- not for who we love. Cos very very few are loved lol I have worked in the music industry and it’s fascinating watching the politically correct socially aware, totally schmooze and overlook Weinsteinesque behaviour from their fellow musicians, while posting about being against predatory behaviour. But they seem to all have to compliment each other- no constructive criticism. I’ve never heard one say “I like some of the songs but wasn’t a fan of that one” It’s all “you’re amazing. I love your work!” I even had someone say “I love your work” who saw me taking photos, didn’t know me or my work. I personally watch out for a psychopath is to look out for balance/ ability to have some self respect or pride, with a healthy dose of being able to joke about one’s self or acknowledge weakness. Too much victimhood or heroics and Im wary. We in Australia are gaining some of the big noting culture but it appears to be not as bad in my kids generation ( my kids cohorts that DONT get into Instagram and self promotion or chasing fame etc ) We have a thing here called “Tall poppy syndrome “ and I like to think it keeps the psychopath numbers down slightly. Cockiness isn’t rewarded. Some suppression of ego is required. We still have them- maybe they’re just more skilled at subtlety - Ambition is ok, but too much is viewed as somewhat conceited and something, to quote my dad , “knock down a peg or two “.

Tad Auty

It should leave a bad feeling- these are some bad folks who should be held accountable. Most of the players in this drama don't leave us with "warm fuzzy feelings" about humanity.

Lauren and John Matthias

Great question Angel- we hope to address this in a future podcast, but the answer is very complicated (as you might expect). Do humans crave to be ruled? Stay tuned, we will get to this issue. Thanks, John

Lauren and John Matthias

Diamond is a great interviewee in the documentary- so glad he spoke up. Yes, I too hope this is the beginning of the end for Antle. He's like the Harvey Weinstein of animal trainers, but actually a much broader and more sinister criminal than Weinstein. Thanks for this comment, John

Lauren and John Matthias

Hi Valorie- thank you for this kind comment. Like you it has always been a frustration that so many true crime folks confuse these two terms- and view them as synonymous. Thanks for being a part of our brilliant community here on Patreon. John

Lauren and John Matthias

Kevin (refuse to call him Doc) Antle is vile. I’m with you guys…how is he not in jail?! I loved some of the quotes by ____ Diamond about the “universe having a perfect mathematical balance” and no one gets away without paying. I paraphrased that badly but I do believe that. I find it ironic that the attention he craves will likely with this series be his undoing. Works for me.

RobynB

I made my comment before he got into Prosocial Psychopaths and I am “fan girling” hardcore here.

Valorie Dodart

Can I just say; I appreciate how Dr. John exemplifies the epitome of professionalism. I’ve thought that for a long time and feel the need now to say it aloud. I also appreciate the thoughtful way he explained the difference between Sociopaths and Psychopaths. The “misuse” is a frustration to me when listening to other similar podcasts and it speaks highly of Dr. John’s credentials to have articulated the difference and usage so perfectly.

Valorie Dodart

I couldn't wait to hear you get your diagnostic hooks into this one! Great choice. I've heard you answer some people's questions & I have one that's been bothering me for years. Doc, would you answer it? Have you seen Thor? There's a line in there where Loki says humans crave to be ruled. Doc, can you address this? I think this is a truth that lies at the heart of many of these puzzles were trying to get our heads around. I know this question is not congealed but can you address this In some way? Thanks for all y'all do!! Much love from Atlanta GA💙✌

Angel Bogart

I had to look up what the Tiger King is LOL. My adult children spoke about the first Netflix documentary about Tiger King but I didn’t pay much attention to it. 😂 Thank you Dr. John and Lauren—I always learn so much at the dinner table.

Susan Dickman

Oh, I can’t wait to hear Dr. John’s take on that circus. The whole Tiger King series leaves me with a very bad feeling.
