Hey Everyone!
Had a bizarre and fun day on the turntables today!
This would be the first time I scratched records outside of my house since the pandemic started... And not only that, it was literally outside... And not only that, it was on a boat on the St. Lawrence River.
This is for an upcoming video I was invited to help create. I wanted to share some behind the scenes photos.
It started, as most nautical tales do, on a dock... Only this dock had a bunch of road worn turntable cases on it...
Oliver is suiting up in this steadicam rig. He also has a light box around his monitor screen so it's easier for him to see the frame when it's really sunny out. It also acts like a little movie theatre for one. To the left of him is Brian, our tour/production manager.
When I started playing the turntable needles were skipping a lot. This was a little boat with a capacity of 8 people and the whole crew was sitting in the stern of the boat. Their combined weight was tilting the boat quite a bit and making the turntables sit at an almost 15 degree angle... which didn't help the skipping much!
It took a couple of takes before I got used to the motion on the water but I eventually got used to it. The boat's captain, Max, also found the ideal speed for the boat that was turntable needle friendly! During one of the takes the wind blew the slip mat off the turntable while I was switching a record but I reloaded the deck with the next record and finished the routine without the slip mat anyway. LOL
All and all it was a lovely day at sea... err river.
There was second "drone" camera crew set up at the Old Port. They flew it out to meet us and filmed a couple of the takes using different drone lenses. It was fun trying to stay focused while what sounded like a giant mosquito was buzzing all around us. At one point I looked up and it looked like the drone was 50 m in the air. Sometimes the drone would run low on batteries and need to return to shore to get it's lens changed or battery switched. We didn't mind the wait because it gave us time to appreciate this rare view of the city.
Anyhow the turntables are home now... drying out!
Excited for you to see it when it's all cut together!
