August 2022 Production Update

I’ve been working on 50 Ways to Die in Minecraft Part 15 since January. I decided to start with the most ambitious part of the video (which I’ve been referring to as the “Big Clip”) first because imagining how much time it was going to take was scary and I wanted to get it over and done with as quickly as possible. But “as quickly as possible” doesn’t mean the same thing as “quickly” because I started work on the Big Clip in February and only just finished it this week. Saying “progress has been slow” would be understating an understatement. You’d need a microscope to see the progress on this thing each month.

But this month, I finally finished the Big Clip. Or rather, this month I finally finished the minimum functional version of the Big Clip. It is now in a state where it has a beginning, middle, and ending, it tells a complete story that makes sense, and it doesn’t have any scenes missing. However, I’m still not quite done with the Big Clip because I have a big list of little visual embellishments that I want to try that I believe will really help the scene make an impact. I’ve been debating with myself about whether I should even bother trying to add these embellishments instead of just cutting to the chase and starting work on the rest of the 50 Ways clips instead, because the list of embellishments is long, but none of them individually seem like they’ll take that much time. I’m really sick of spending all my time on the Big Clip, but I also really want to see some of these extra effects I’ve dreamed up. Right now, I think I’m going to take the time to try them, but I might regret it when September finally rolls around.

So for August, I’ll hopefully work on the Big Clip for just a little bit longer, then finally get to work on the rest of the video. Right now, I’m envisioning spending about one more week on the Big Clip, then spending the rest of August working on the other 50 ways to die, but based on my track record, what will probably happen instead is that I’ll spend most of August on the extra effects of the Big Clip and won’t get around to working on the rest of the 50 Ways videos until the last couple of days. That’s how these things tend to go with me.
