The city of Narbonne (Narbo Martius - Gallia)

Sorry for a time of little uploads! Alain is traveling in Indonesia so he is unable to tend to the page so I, Marc, will take over:).

This month I am on holiday for no less than 4 weeks and of course I tricked my wife into visiting all kinds of nice places with beautiful beaches. One of those places is Narbonne, France, which besides some very nice beaches also has a splendid Roman past. Who would have thought;).

Founded in 118 BC during the Republic, Narbo Martius was quickly made into the capital of the newly established province of Gallia Transalpina. Ceasar left some of his veterans to settle there and during the first century AD it had more than 50.000 inhabitants, maybe even 100.000, which is more than it has today.

Narbonne has a fantastic archeological museum and more than a few landmarks that remind of the Roman past, like original columns, a nearly completely intact underground warehouse, and parts of the original road. I can highly recommend visting this nice town whenever you are around, it has a nice Mediterranean vibe and a very pretty old city centre with an awesome medieval citadel.

My stay here gave me plenty of inspiration for new videos! Next stop is Tarragone or in Roman times known as Tarraco. Besides beaches this Spanish town also has quite some interesting Roman landmarks.

My wife and daugther can't wait.

Lovely images. And you have to get them young. My parents didn't take me around Roman ruins (they're pretty scarce in North America) but every trip involved something historical; even a tiny village would have a church or graveyard or maybe a one-room local museum. This sort of thing affects the developing mind.

The quality of the uploads means that we'll cope with a bit of scarcity :) Have a superb holiday.
