Patron Q&A 039: September 2024

This month, we field Qs about getting back to Star Trek on the Watchcast, keeping our hobbies separate from our job, some of our deepest pet peeves, why the PS5 Pro exists, which Switch Metroid Prime 4 will actually release on, and a bunch more.

I do really feel like it would be good for the guys to get back to Star Trek. Especially since I feel it's even more important for Vinnie to get to The Next Generation. I remember several times Vinnie mentioned during the Twin Peaks watch-through that he felt like he suddenly understood all these pop culture references that had been going over his head for years, and I feel like Star Trek and especially The Next Generation has SO MUCH MORE of that. Also, he'd been talking recently about introducing shows and movies to his kids, and I strongly feel that no kid should grow up without being introduced to Star Trek The Next Generation. Star Trek was and is a massive cultural phenomenon: no kid should grow up without having had the opportunity to watch it.

I have learned to bite my tongue in most situations when it comes to correcting proper speaking. Having a feeling, usually pain related and comparing it to another feeling that is for the most part impossible to experience (feels like a thousand needles are stabbing me in my eye), that sort of thing bugs me, but I will let it go usually. What I can't let slide is when people say 'exspecially' or 'exscape.' Another one is height, but people put a 'th' on the end. I will always try and find a way to say weight ('th') when someone does it just to see what the reaction is. I think my biggest one is when someone says they 'have no idea' or they 'have no clue' or when they ask for none of a thing by saying 'with no' as opposed to 'without any.' I don't know how to stop, so much so that it annoys people around me.

With so much Star Trek out there, it would be sort of cool if you guys sampled all the various shows over time. The original series has its charm, but seasons are a big commitment. Maybe do like... a favorite TNG two-parter, something from DS9, Voyager, even the newer shows. We just did the Twin Peaks marathon and I imagine people that don't like that show were real bummed out (I was way into it). The Watchcast format works well with variety month to month, and dedicating months to a season can put a damper on things. Watching a handful of episodes of a show might even open the door to other shows. A TV sampler, if you will.

I'm not on Discord -- is there a way to submit questions for these monthly Q&As other than through the Discord channel?

I would personally really love it if you guys not only did a Star Trek focused podcast, but also covered Star Trek: TNG (and possibly DS9 and Voyager in the future). One way you could approach TNG is by watching the seasons on your own time and then recording a big episode every season that covers all of your thoughts on the season you just watched - you guys could also split this up into halves (so 2 podcasts per season), where you all meet up around the halfway point of a season to record an episode. Just an idea, it would definitely cut down on the amount of podcasts that you would have to do. Looking forward to hearing more Star Trek talk from you guys!

Oh wow! Arguably a selfish question (as an apprehensive, maybe-future hauler of art supplies and woodworking tools), but thank y’all for answering! Loved hearing about the family hauls, drummer hauls, and pre(?)-tacoma stories of life on the road. Note to self: see how to get gas covered! Gas gas gas ⛽️

Related to Alex being annoyed with people in film/tv production not knowing how to light anymore, no one seems to know how to shoot night scenes anymore. There can be intention to not being able to see like in a horror movie but there are standard blockbusters that have night scenes that are unwatchable in the day because you can't see a single thing.
