My sketch layers aren't usually very interesting, but this one shows how little I work with before I ink sometimes. Mostly I just need a guide to steady my hand. As long as I know where I'm going I can make a more or less proper line. The first panel sketch of Patricia is actually from a much older image of her. Sometimes I did into an archive to keep myself from deviating too far from the original designs. Her flyaway hairs have evolved over time into a very stylized form instead of straggly hairs, like they were intended to be. Hair tends to evolve based on how much fun I have making the lines. Which is how Jo ended up with her feathers on the back of her hair. I just enjoy the hand movements it takes to make them. I don't know if any other artist does things like that but I do it a lot. Also, just to tag the post I gave Joel the surname Ladd for reasons that I will likely forget. I don't intend to make him a regular character, so it's not really important. I just happened to have the perfect name handy for... reasons.
