Carol Dancin'

These are obviously images from the comic. The only one worth explaining is the one I call Netflix Carol. I was talking with someone I know "in the industry" as they say and they were telling me what I would have to do just as a baseline to get my comic made into an Netflix show. The thing that struck me as funniest was Carol having to be recast as black, since it's been a meme that all redheaded characters are being swapped out for black characters for several years now. Having someone just say it to me outright, with a matter of fact tone struck me as funny. The discussion went over a lot of very American specific hang ups about race and another "funny" thing was if it was okay for Carol and Thomas's relationship to be interracial or not and the answer was more or less it's not. They were like "It would be better if Thomas is black", but being of color would maybe slip by. I was like does it matter that the perspective of the story is more or less a white perspective? Which brought us to the fact that if my comic ever got sold virtually none of the actual spirit of it would survive past the director's vision anyway, and the series would basically just become a framework for someone else to tell their story without having to think up names. Which then led them to telling me that most likely if such a show was going to be developed someone else would just steal the framework of my comic, pass it off as their idea, and by the time it became a show it wouldn't be my work anyway so I'd never even know. The only thing they wouldn't be able to take is the stuff I have the copyright for, like the name. Even if I managed to figure out they had lifted elements of my work there's no way I could sustain a court case against them anyway and, at best, I might get a little money just to settle out of court that would be taken by whatever lawyers I hired to bring the case in the first place. I remarked that this all sounded extremely dystopian and my friend said it was going to get way worse once the suits figure out how to make AI do most of the writing and they expected to lose their job in the next two years.

FUCKING BLEAK.

At the end of it all it doesn't really matter because I wouldn't sell the rights to my work in the first place and I can't fight anyone who tries to steal it, so it's better to just not worry about it and hope I can just keep making it in peace until the collapse of society. You guys seem to like it at least and that's just barely enough people to keep me from being homeless. So damn the man! XD

I mean, if they're changing your work so much you wouldn't even recognize it, why would you be entitled to a piece of the pie? If they actually took your comic with your characters sure. But if you're going to extrapolate that far, one could argue that you just took Clerks and expanded on that for your comic. That said, the American entertainment industry got taken over by finance bros and is circling the drain, so yeah, pretty bleak.

If you get this animated and ever stream you can use her as your 'canary' in the stream

If it helps, the collapse of society appears to be closer than ever now... 8-(
