目は口ほどにものを言う（The eye is the window of the mind）

これまでSkebなどのコミッションで、Vtuberさんを含め依頼者さんのオリジナルキャラクターを色々と描かせていただいていますが、それらのキャラクターを描いていると、「目」がキャラクターを大きく特徴づける要素の一つだなと感じることがあります。

I have been commissioned by Skeb and other commissions to draw various original characters of the client's own, including Vtubers. When I draw these characters, I sometimes feel that "eyes" are one of the elements that greatly characterize the character.

今回は、これまでにコミッションで描かせていただいたキャラクターから、いくつか特徴的な目を抜粋して紹介してみたいと思います。

In this issue, I would like to introduce a selection of some characteristic eyes from the characters I have had the pleasure of drawing for commissions.

【Case1　ゾンB子さん】

VtuberのゾンB子さんです。瞳孔やハイライトが無く、グルグルの目がとてもゾンビらしいですね。

She is Vtuber ZonBko. She looks very zombie-like with no pupils or highlights and glazed eyes.

【Case2　BONさん】

VtuberのBONさんです。中央に行くほど段々と暗くなっていき引き込まれるような瞳と、ソリッドな形のハイライトが特徴的ですね。

（動画の時よりも目の表現を元のデザインに寄せる形に変更しています）

She is BON, a Vtuber. She has eyes that become progressively darker as they move toward the center, drawing the viewer's gaze in, and solidly shaped highlights.

(The expression of the eyes has been changed to be closer to the original design than in the video.)

【Case3　Ashton Martenさん】

VtuberのAshton Martenさんです。大きな瞳孔にソリッドな白いハイライト。併せて赤いハイライトを入れることで、目の情報量が増え、かつ見る人の目を引くインパクトを持たせていますね。赤は緑と補色関係にあり、小さくても（むしろ小さいからこそ）効果は抜群。

She is Ashton Marten, a Vtuber. She has large pupils with solid shaped white highlights. The red highlights also increase the amount of information in the eyes and have an impact that catches the viewer's eye. Red is a complementary color to green, and even though it is small (or rather, because it is small), the effect is outstanding.

【Case4　Angus Nicnevenさん（Ariph）】

依頼者であるAngus Nicnevenさんの、Ariphというオリジナルキャラクターです。猫のような縦長の瞳孔や、白いハイライトの入った睫毛、そしてアイシャドウが特徴的です。右目は銀色、左目は金色と左右で瞳の色が違うのもキャラクターを特徴づけていますね。

This is an original character named Ariph by the client Angus Nicneven. The character has cat-like vertical pupils, white highlighted eyelashes, and eye shadow. The character is also characterized by the different color of the eyes on each side: the right eye is silver and the left eye is gold.

こうしてみると、目の描き方は千差万別で、見た時の印象もかなり変わります。目はキャラクターの魅力を作り出すために重要なパーツなので、より自分の作風や描くキャラクターに合った表現を探し求めていきたいですね。

コミッションで依頼者さんのキャラクターをお借りする場合は、元のデザインを最優先にしつつ、自分の絵柄に落とし込む必要があるので、毎回とても勉強になっています。例えば「なぜこのハイライトはこの位置にあるのだろう？」と考えてみるのも、とても楽しいのです。

In this way, there are a thousand different ways to draw eyes, and the impression they give when seen varies considerably. Eyes are an important part in creating the charm of a character, so I would like to seek out expressions that better suit my style and the character I am portraying.

When I borrow a client's character for a commission, I have to put the original design first while incorporating it into my own painting style, so I learn a lot every time. For example, "Why is this highlight in this position?" It is also a lot of fun to think about it.
