If you do that episode on anime's relationship to France that you mentioned, you might have a fun chance checking out "dutch studies" or the academic study and consolidation of dutch books allowed during the Sakoku degree. One of the most popular subjects of dutch studies was Napoleon and his near total conquest of Europe, as comparisons where drawn to formation of the Shogunate. Later on I also believe I read that Japanese prefectures are know as such because of it being a Napoleonic term.
