Thank you, cameo guy! And thank you for looking after Dawn, Dawn's friend, whom I don't believe I ever named.

I like the little acts of kindness I can sneak in - the little selfless gestures and friendships that don't call a lot of attention to themselves but which hint this is a world where plenty of people do actually love each other very much, even if events and larger institutions are often against them.

There was some discussion about Kasslyne being a "crapsack world." I've never considered it that. We do spend a lot of time in its darker corners but there are a lot of rather powerful relationships, a lot of love, a lot of sweetness. You peel back the rind and find a glowing golden core of smiling fish and a doting eternity that doesn't seem to want to relinquish its children, for better or for worse.

Do you guys think it's a crapsack world? As dark as Berserk or as Game of Thrones?

It's more like "This is normally a great universe, really, you just came in at a bad time." Because seriously, all the shit has hit the fan in the past few years.

Nah, I never got the crapsack feel. More of a Sanderson-esque "all this stuff is going on and some of it is some F-d up s**t but some of its awesome to"

Alex

No, not crapsack, because there are enough incidents of light and love and hope to make the dark themes worth enduring. Good storytelling, beautifully illustrated!

Cameo Guy is a tacit caster?

Ah, you precious man.

It's not a kind world, but I wouldn't call it crapsack. If you take the entry on tvtropes as a reference, the difference is that good impulses are not routinely crushed and punished in Unsounded. There is hope and positive developments along with negative (e.g. Jivi couldn't help the captured silver vessels, but he escaped and he saved the Quigleys; the silver was horrible and killed many people, but it was at least weakened and flushed away before it took over completely). There treachery and suffering, but I don't get the impression that everything is on a downward spiral - there's a chance to turn things around and make them better and this is what drives the story forward. So: Harsh, yes. Crapsack, no.

Reed Copperstrand

I see it as a cruel world (the Ssaelit view resonates with me in that respect), but one where people still love each other, and make the best of things, and even try to change the world for the better. It may be a crapsack arrangement (maybe no more crapsack than ours, though), but the human part of it isn't crapsack.

The sun hides not the ocean, which is the dark side of this earth, and which is two thirds of this earth. So, therefore that mortal man who hath more of joy than sorrow in him, that mortal man cannot be true--not true, or undeveloped. With books the same...There is a wisdom that is woe; but there is a woe that is madness. And there is a Catskill eagle in some souls that can alike dive down into the blackest gorges, and soar out of them again and become invisible in the sunny spaces. And even if he for ever flies within the gorge, that gorge is in the mountains; so that even in his lowest swoop the mountain eagle is still higher than other birds upon the plain, even though they soar.

I've never thought of it as a crapsack world. As you said, there's a lot of wonder and good relationships mixed in with some of the terrible things that have happened -- but I do think the chapters of dark and red with the silver are haunting and hard to get out of the head. In that way, I empathize with Sette, who's clearly been shaken up by everything she's experienced. Hopefully Duane's renewed sense of purpose will carry us on.
