Though the High-Priestess cites this new Black Tongue development as a mark against her Majesty, their rejection of her choice of successor was already a foregone conclusion before this meeting started. Bell's been working on this a while, and you just didn't do much to change their minds, Queen Sonorie~

The next two pages are favourites of mine~~

Did Disney's Rapunzel have a mother?? I've not seen it. In the original story her parents had to give her up at birth to a witch, due to an unfortunate cabbage craving that developed during pregnancy (the cabbages belonged to the witch). She never saw either of her birth parents again in that version. Disney tends to tidy things up a bit, as you know. I mean, the original little mermaid died in pain, unloved (which was kind of a better lesson from a parents' POV, than, "Do whatever you want; Daddy will fix it." Not that I don't love that movie anyway... ).

Oh, I can think of a few Disney heroes with moms - Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Jim Hawkins - but yeah, single dads or orphans are more common. Jivi still has his mom and our fourth kid hero later in the story will have her mom, but it does seem a little uncommon!

But speaking of Disney, have you noticed Disney heros/heroines NEVER have living mums? It goes beyond Disney as well and certainly supplies to our Unsounded kids. I remember having a sort of Revelation as a child, that I could never have extraordinary magical adventures and keep my mother as well. As I love/d my mother, I was deeply conflicted in my feelings about this.

No body, no crime.

Oh, man, that's right! I keep forgetting :3

Nope. Her dad is ded. Like super ded. You said it yourself. He died falling, like true Disney villain.

Your impression of Emne is spot-on. Her grief is more related to guilt than feelings of actual loss. She liked Toma just fine by the end, but she was bored of him and lonely all at home by herself. Easy target for Karl. Chea did have nice two-toe nannies but they've all been kicked out of the city. Hopefully dad will come home soon.

My impression is that Emne Toma revels in drama (with herself playing tragic heroine) and is, thus, always a bit of a wreck. Unfair assessment? I mean, she was about to jettison Toma, so how torn up can she really be over his death? (I hope poor Chea--the real tragic figure in the Toma tale--has had some decent nannies.)

Chancellor Ufal is supposed to represent the nobles at Council. Karl's here today mostly as a narrative expedient so I could show what he'd done and how he'd scored Lady Toma's hand. Also he's nice comic relief. The most powerful of the nobility are allowed to sit at meetings, but they don't have any special privileges here - Ufal is their mouthpiece. Captain Toma would never sit at one of these meetings. He never played politics, not his thing. Lady Emne Toma is the one of true noble blood who cast their vote and met with Ufal. She's in mourning for the Captain though, and has given it all up to her new husband, at least for the moment. Emne Toma is kind of a wreck, I don't know if you remember her from last chapter. She's in no state currently to play politics, and Karl is taking full advantage.

The next queen is chosen by committee, but ruffle-butt can just marry into this powerful council, regardless of his personal qualifications? Also, I assume RB is taking over Emil Toma's seat (he's not really dead, correct?). We already know Emil preferred the battlefront to being home with his wife; how did the council make its decisions without him?
