I wanted to show Roger quite literally falling apart thanks to the snakejerk's ministrations. This was his end, and we won't ever see him lucid again in the present day.
So the whole marriage was a sham, it seems. I don't think this is a terrible shocker, they don't seem to really match up well as a couple. Even for an unageing Copper Roger is too young at nearly 50 to match her Majesty's ~65 years, and the whole thing looked a bit ridiculous up close. It must enrage Alderode though, and very easily allow it to paint Roger Foi-Hellick as the worst and most execrable brand of traitor and fool. This allows them to save face since they seem unable to kill him, and provides a reason for Roger fleeing to Sonorie's side. Assassins or not, surely Alderode can't realise the unimaginably desperate depth of Roger's betrayal.
But! We'll get the full story there next chapter. I'm skipping Wednesday but I'll be back on Friday with Sette and a new scene. Something a little more light-hearted, eh?
