Sette, stop being so meta.

I admit I found Sette somewhat grating at the very beginning, but I came around at the end of Chapter 1, when she was genuinely sorry about the destruction of the wandering root and genuinely unable to properly express her feelings. I always enjoyed it that Ashley did create a bratty character, but did not use her just for laughs or minimize or excuse the impact her behavior has on others. (Still the classic bullying always annoys me. So I stand by my Arrrggh ;-)

It can be hard for kids (and adults) to see that the immature brat with heaps of bravado is actually wearing their heart on their sleeve. In my experience, kids like that are selfish in some ways but deeply sensitive/vulnerable in others... My mom would say that they're hard to like but easy to love.

The dynamic between Sette, Jivi, Matty, and the twins is amazing to watch because it so accurately captures the ways that children interact, and I have especially loved seeing the twins interact with Sette (as they seem to "see" her in a way that few characters besides Duane have).

K

Sette IS a brat, and a troll, and a bully, but she does come through when you really need her to. When Duane is truly hurting, she recognises it and tries to help in her own immature way (you'll see this in two pages' time even!). When Jivi was feeling bad when they were chatting she all but invited him home with her so he could find a job. Sette has a good heart, but definitely lacks the experience and upbringing to manifest it the way we'd like her to.

Ashley

Which isn't to *deny* that she's a Grade A little shit (she 100% is), but somehow it just inspires deep-seated affection in me. I've gathered that my reaction to her is a bit offside though, hence the theorizing about exposure.

K

Partially because of the environment she was raised in, but also partially because (I think?) she's some sort of eternal child, and a child's brain really can't handle inputs the way an adult's can.

K

I wonder if you need to know kids like Sette to really warm to her? For me, I've always felt this overwhelming tenderness for her because she reminds me so much of my baby sister (when she was little), my daughter (when she was little), and my son (who is still little). Granted Sette is much older, but I feel like her emotional development has been stunted.

K

Yep, with the same rules applying.

Do glamours work on two-toes?

Andrew Judd

If you know what Duane is, his glamour doesn't work unless you allow it to. The glamour works on Perception - if you already perceive Duane to be a corpse, you're gonna see a corpse. Sette has her own unique perception of her friend Duane, so she sees her own personal amalgamation of the man she met in the chapter 7 flashback, his dead self, and what she believes he SHOULD look like.

Ashley

Duane's so upset that he let down his glamour? Or is he not bothering when everyone in the room knows what he is?

Andrew Judd

Argh, Sette! I mean, she's a great character and I even came to like her, but I am really, really glad I don't have to deal with her in irl and I feel for all the characters that have to. :-D
