I just find this idea fascinating. It's not one I've seen often explored when writing about the undead. If your physical brain is gone and we're going with the idea of a soul - whether you're a ghost or a sentient zombie or a skeleton - what would your memory be like?
Kasslynians have fairly unique biology in that their soul and their brain are recording memories simultaneously, like a mirrored RAID 1 array, but the nature of each medium results in different input. Their brains filter and interpret input much the same as ours do, but their souls are impartial recorders, resulting in a fairly unbiased and clear record of events. In life, the memories of the brain take precedence, since the way they have evolved to curate experiences is so important to human survival. But in death? All you have to look back on is what's in your soul. And this is what Duane goes swimming in every night he dives into the khert.
I also highly enjoy the fact that Two-toes understand so much more about biology than humans do.
But yes, lots of fun reflections on this world here.
