He's the cocksure new officer with a lot to prove and a squad of boys he's trained and is very proud of. But now the ground's figuratively and literally crumbled from beneath him, and Lemuel gets to show him how a soldier is supposed to act even in the blackest of caverns. Lemuel gets angry, Lemuel gets extreme, but Lemuel always knows how to Keep Going. He's going to keep everyone together while Duane recovers. I really enjoy that about this part of the story; it shows how alike they both ultimately are.

Lemuel has suffered plenty of trauma the past few days, he's just more inured to it than Duane, having learned you have to bounce back, or someone will cut you down. He shoves his trauma and his mistakes and his second-guessing just as deep as his brother does, and lets the ameliorating touch of time dull his memories.

2019-07-17 04:39:48 +0000 UTCOn the bright side, we know that Will is gonna survive. I do wonder tho, how much difference Lem would have between his 'body-memory' versus the raw, unfiltered khert-memory of this event- would there be as big a gap between reality & remembrance as Duane has?
