Notice he immediately brings it up when he feels Duane looking at him? But... only because he's been uneasy over how he let his guard down and cried like some kind of kid. And Duane? All the brooding he's been doing since Captain Claggart decked him was apparently spent devising this brilliant plan to save everyone.
The brothers are frequently talking and thinking past each other. Communicate properly, morons.
Also... keep an eye on Will.

Oh, Duane.... I'll always be suspicious of Lem. Until you prove me wrong, I just know he had a role to play in what happened to Duane.
2019-08-26 04:42:53 +0000 UTCTalking past each other is sadly frequent, even when people are dear to one another, if they aren't careful to view the other person as always partly mysterious and to be learned; if you feel you know the other person already, entirely, they function as a symbol to you rather than an actual person. Duane hasn't wondered what is going on in Lem's heart and mind, or consulted his view of their situation or preferences for the future; Lem's one item on a check-list of things to be saved by taking them away from this war. Even though some things Lem has said imply a highly weird idiosyncratic interpretation going on in his head that accounts for Duane's presence there-- I'm burning to know what is happening in there and I'm not even his loving sibling! I don't even think i LIKE him much!
