I think we can presume his parents had a lot invested in him. I think we can also gather that even the rich and privileged in Alderode are expected to conform to society.
What the hell is "The Red Cost?" That's never been mentioned before.
Vampire's main gripe with Alderode seems to be its stifling control over its citizens. Though he's certainly enjoyed at least a fair chunk of those "four centuries" granted to the "red fleshed." Hypocrite? Or has it just taken him this long to make any real progress with his revolution?

Yes, babies were born without castes. This resulted in an entire Avelpitian generation - small though it was - of stateless, casteless people. At this point in the Foi-Hellick Affair, most remaining Avelpitian citizens have either surrendered or been captured by clean-up crews like Duane's. Trials are being held and some Avelpitians are being executed, others jailed, others set free as victims of circumstance. The casteless have no ghers to go to though, and now have to contend with being despised everywhere they try and start a new life.
