Two character things I really like on this page: Duane and Lemuel do not for one second question going after Will. Of course they're going to go after Will, even if they die trying to save him. There is not a moment of hesitation because they are both at heart decent people intent on a better world - yet at the same time, they left Dhampir no other option but to toss Will. Because they don't respect her they wouldn't verbally engage her, even though that might have deescalated the situation.
If Duane had said: "All right, flee. Drop the boy and you can flee," she would have done so. Instead he immediately disarmed her without knowing what that would result in. Duane talks a lot - way too much! - but he doesn't often listen, or meaningfully engage people he has deemed beneath him. This gets him in trouble a lot even still.
And the other thing is I really like Duane flying Lemuel around and Lem not even ever being fazed by his brother's stupid pymary. It's just some nonsense that Duane does, whatever.

I appreciate you noticing that :D The rest of this scene is all about their teamwork too. Kind of what the whole chapter's been building towards!

2019-10-12 02:06:58 +0000 UTCI really appreciate Duane just admitting he's scared and doesn't want to go alone (and therefore acknowledging Lem's ability to be the better soldier and help him stay grounded, figuratively) while Lemuel simultaneously asks for Duane to use his big special words to explain what they're about to do. They're good brothers for all that they usually go right past each others.
