I had two versions of the second page - one with dialogue and one without. In the end I went with the one without, but there is a version where I had Duane explain that the newly blinded Shaensigin is afraid that the drum is the heart beating again, and she's backing away from it. I hated it though, I'm hoping it's clear enough without that explanation D:

I forgot to mention this earlier when I was still reading through it--I like that Duane's anatomy research last night actually did help him save the day, but not in the way he expected! And Lem making full use of that drum. The Chekhov's gun game in this chapter is strong.
