I don't think the Chief is winning any fans. Maybe Toma and Quigley can bond later over how much they want something to step on her.

Easy to say for someone who hasn't had to live through a nations people going berserk with insane bloodlust for no apparent reason. To her the aldish are people that could go crazy at any moment. Add to that what she learned about Vienne while studying Uaid and knowing (some) of the queens plans and her attitude really isn't that surprising. It's easy to judge when you're not the one in the position where you have to find a solution to an imminent problem.

For "realist" read "sociopath."

The only disregard towards others I can remember has been the waterwomen torture. That's certainly bad but doesn't make me think she doesn't care about (Cresce) human lives. I think she's trying her best with the knowledge that she has. She knows that the shrine will fall and the people will die if they don't defend themselves so why not try the cannon. If they're all going to die anyway why worry about a cannon that might explode. Also in the broader sense, if she knows the full scope of the queens plans, the cost and the cost of failure then she might not be in the position to take her time here. She's a cog in the queens plans and if she can't finish the job the queen gave her she knows how that will affect her plans. That's why i feel she's been pretty real about everything. She knows the queens grand plans and now has to weigh every action against the misery should the queens plans fail. (I trust Sonorie and think that what she's planning will end the war and the misery it causes) That being said, I might be misreading her. I wont pretend to remember every detail and am probably wrong.

I actually kind of like her too (in a "she's hot but a psycho" way, to quote the popular song), but I wouldn't describe her as a realist. I'd say she pretty much fits the "mad scientist" trope, pursuing her inventions with near-complete disregard for the wellbeing of others - that's what reminds me of Vienne about her, but where Vienne was a hopeless idealist, she is deeply cynical (but who knows, given a few more years to live, Vienne may have turned cynical too).

I feel like the Chief illustrates well one of those cardinal rule of storytelling: a character can be as evil as the day is long and the audience will not necessarily object to them or stop sympathizing; they just can’t be BORING.

I'm with you Quigley and Toma, how about a Uaid clone stepping on her? That would be just wonderful. (Even though I kind of like the chief, she's seems like a realist and it's nice to see someone a little more grounded)
